POOR HARVEST GENERAL
Benton County Grain Runs From
5 to 16 Bushels Per Acre.
Monroe, Or., Aug. 6. Moat discour
aging reports of grain yield continue to
oooie from every direction. On the
farm of James Herron a piece of sum'
mer-fallow with a crop of fall wheat
promised a heavy .Yield. ADy one
with knowledge of such matters
would have guessed the. orop to
return at least 30 bushels per
acre. The straw was very heavy
and tbo beads large, the stand be
ing thick, jet when threshed the result
was a good average of 13 bushels per
acre. On the other band, the poor
looking crops make as many sacks to
the acres as do the fine-appearing
field?. The grain production Is all '.he
way from 6 to 16 .bushels per acre, the
latter figure being the highest heard of
in this section ot the country for wheat.
Towne Welcomed Home.
Duloth, Minn, Aug 8 - Hon Chas
A Towne, who was nominated for
Vive President by the Fopullrt party,
returned io his borne here today. Be
was royally received by his friends and
neighbors, anil escorted from the depot
to bis residence by a procession and
brass band. Ue will remain here only
a few days, when he will start for the
East to begin campaign work in that
section.
His Life Was Saved.
Mr J Lilly, a prominent citizen Of
Hannibal, Mo., lately had - wonderful

His Townspeople Turn Out With
a Brass Band and Give the
Candidate a Good

Blooming ton, III., Aug. 4, The
democrat lo candidate for vice presi
dent, Adlal Stevenson, returned to his
native olty today. This Is his first ap
pearance since his nomination. All
the oltizeno turned out. Irrespective of
party. They formed a aarrlage pro
cession headed by a band. Thousands
followed on foot to Franklin Park
where the welcome waa prepared. Mr
Stevenson felicitously replied.
Thb S. P. Co. at Wobk. The
Southern Paciflo Railroad company
has been spending a great deal of
money Improving Its main line in
Oregon during the past three years,
and still has a large foroe of men em
ployed in ballasting track and strength
enlng bridges from Grants Pass
north as far as Woodburn. The ties
now being put down are expected to
last 15 years. Old rails are giving
place to new 62-pound steel rails on
the line between Salem and Woodburn,
a distance of SO miles, the extra heavy
traffic: In that portion of the fertile
Willamette valley rendering the
stronger rails necessary. Eighty cars
are kept busy hauling gravel Irom the
company's pits at Myrtle Creek, to be
used in ballasting the track north of
Roseburg. The grade will be raised
several inches, as tbe new dressing Is
applied to tbe roadbed later on. A
good many wooden treaties between
Roseburg and Grant Pass have been
relieved of responsibility by a filling
of decomposed gravel being dumped
around tbem. These new fillings are
somewhat more expensive than tbe
timber trestles,' hut tbey last forever.
Most of the company's depot grounds
have now been treated to a six-Inch
coating of decomposed quartz from the
banks near Merlin.
A machine for 'piling sacked grain

Verdict of the Coroner's Jury in
the Simmons-Buchanan
Shooting.
Walla. Walla, Aoguot 6. The
coroner's jury selected to hold an in
quest over the remains of Will 1)
Buchanan, who was shot Friday night
by Jumee Simmons, at the home of the
hitter, after hearing tbe evidence of the
officers and neighbors, as well b Mrs
Simmons, who wss In the bedroom
with Buchanan when tbe latter was
shot, returned a verdict that It wns
a case of Justifiable homicide.
Saturday afternoon word wra re
ceived that Simmons was at Wallula
After shooting Buchanan he had
boarded a train and gone to that place
between two cars. It is expected he
will return to the citv, and no attempt
will bs made to prosecute blm. Mr
and Mrs Simmons have been married
about ten years, and have four chil
dren. Mrs Simmons testified that they
never bad any domestic trouble, and
that he had always provided liberally
for his family. ' ,

from ' tbe Ban Gabriel forest reserve
state that tbe great fires which have

weeks are now under control. A vast
amount of valuable timber has been

Making Lumber. The Eugene
raw mill sawed a little lumber today,
the first since the disastrous fire. Tbe
machinery worked ai well as could be
