The army reorganization bill passed
at the recent session of congress pro
vided for a large lnorease in the nura-1
ber of cadets at West Point, permitting
two additional appointments from
each state. The appointment of the
son of Ex-Got W P Lord to one of the
two places open to Oregon boys was
recently announced, he having been
recommended by Senator Blmon.
State Fund Divided.
State Treasurer Moore yesterday
made the annual apportionment of the
common school fund interest, amount
ing to $207,467.34. This Is the largest
sum ever apportioned among the
schools of this state, and it Is divided
upon the basis of a larger school pop
ulation than has ever been reported
before. The total number of persons
of school age 133,181, and. tbe per cap.
lta division Is 11.66, wblob Is also the
largest ratio upon which tbe sobool
funds have ever been distributed.

Tuesday afternoon sparks from tbe
engine Ignited tbe straw in the Held
southeast of tbe city, owned by J P
Milllorn and rented by Ed Billy. It
was a pretty sight from the town, and
the flames rushed over the field like a
genuine prairie fire. It made tbe men
engaged In threshing move lively to
get the separator and cook wagon out
of danger. Tbe loss was saall as do

Yesterday morning about S o'clock
fire broke out In the residence owned
and occupied by L Lebar, just north
of town. It is not known just how
tbe fire originated, but Mr Lebar
thinks tbe moss on tbe roof, which
was vtry dry, caught from sparks

burned to tbe ground. Tbe contents
were a total loss practical ly, as ouly
about $20 wortb was saved. There was
$600 Insurance on the bouse. Mr Le
