with a smothered groan and smoto the
tree with his clinched fist.
Then he made a step forward to take

and again paused just ns abruptly.

walked over to the sergeant. "I don't

vigorous fusillade of the wood. In a mo
ment Bolllho wns struck in threo places.
Realizing nil was over, ho crawled to a
tree and got himself propped against it.
Still unconquered, witli a revolver in his
right hand nnd- blood oozing from his
wounds, he wns nt bay. Tho natives,
hearing no further firing, began to tnko
courage, and after a final volley agoin
returned to the clinrgo.
But hark! Ho hears his regimental
call brayed out; then tho cliargo is sound
ed, nnd with a hoarse cheer a squadron
of his own regiment came galloping round
tbe plantation and crashed into the rebels.
Short and sharp was the reckoning, and
within five minutes the wholo body wero
either dead or prisoners. .
Their work done, the troopers swnrmed
Into the wood, handed by the colonel him
self, in search of their comrade and found
him dying against the tree. Kneeling bo
side him, tho colonel placed his arm
round tho wounded man.
"My poor fellow! Are you much hurt?"
"Done for, sir," gasped Bolitho. "Aro
