It was night and there was not much
going on. There were four or five doc
tors besides my friend around, and
some one suggested a gnme of poker.

nurse knocked at the door and said,
'Doctor, I tlilnk the patient in No. 8 Is
dying; won't you come down? 'Yes,
right away,' said the doctor. 'I'll draw
three cards.' He filled his linnd and
played it, nnd he kept right on playing
for about 15 minutes, when there came
another knock at the door and the
nurse said: 'Really, doctor, that man's
condition Is very serious. I know he's
dying; won't you comer The doctor
sold: 'Yes, yes; oh, I forgot I'll bo
there In Just a minute I'll raise you a
quarter, doc.'
"Well, he played that hand out and
the next one, and then he said he
guessed he'd go see the patient The
nurse met him half way down the
Btalrs and told him the man was dead.
Now, what do you think or that?"
"Well, they get hardened, they see so
much Buffering," said one of the party
apologetically.
"If he'd gone when he was first call
ed, he probably couldn't have done
anything to save the man's life," said
the second.
"Yes," said the discordant man, "but

A QUEER OCCUPATION.
Gathering the Down of Cnttnlle In
the Jersey Meadows.
One of the queerest Industries has
grown up on the Hackensack meadows,
an otherwise apparently useless bog
upon which It Is unsafe for man or
beast to venture. In the summer cer
tain parts of the meadows are covered
with a dense growth of cattails. They
grow particularly rank and large.
Sometimes the tall, or furry part, is a
foot or more long and thick In propor
tion. The light, furry down Is long
and soft, bearing a close resemblance
to down when first taken from the
stalk.
Certain people always more or less
quick to see the advantages of a waste
product have begun gathering the Boed
down from cattails and are making It
a considerable business. Just before
tho Ice Is gone In the spring is the
time selected. Provided with a largo
sack In which to store the feathery
products, the gatherer goes about
among the tall flags, pulls off the down,
deposits It In bis sack nnd takes It
home. It Is not a particularly plcasaut
piece of work, because the little bits of
down fly all over one, getting In tho
eyes, the nose, the mouth and cars, and
completely cover one's clothing. But
It furnishes work, and men and women
dolt
It Is taken from the sack, carefully
spread where It will dry thoroughly,
and It Is then ready to be ui.el iu pil
lows or wherever else genuine animal
down Is advisable. It doesn't last loug,
because Its fibers lack elasticity, but
for a time the pillow will be as soft as
any.
Those who gather It make reasona
bly fair pay at It, though hardly enough
when the danger and the dlsngrcenble
character of the work are considered.

The dog catcher Is not the only per
son In the city who Is sincerely bated
by both man and animal. There Is a
cat catcher as well, and be comes In
for bis full share of antipathy. He
makes a living at the business, and a
very good one. It Is said. Few are
aware of the fact that pussy's fur is a
very desirable article of commerce.
There are any number of dealers In
this city who are glad to pay all the
way from 50 cents to tl for a cat's
skin, according to size and quality.
The method of catching the unsuspect
ing cat Is a particularly mean one. It
la a well established fact that cats
are very fond of catnip and will troop
after a man who carries a bundle of It
This greed leads to the undoing of
pussy, who will come to a stand If a
bit of the herb Is thrown on the ground
and Is thus made an easy prey. A bag
and a chloroformed sponge do the rest,
and many a household pet, the disap
pearance of which caused sorrow, can
be accounted for In this way. Phila

Ex-Assistant United States District
Attorney Sutherland Tenney of New
S.ork was graduated from the Colum
bia Law school In 1875, when be carried
off the first prize of $500. A dlsap
pointed competitor congratulated him
and added:

Swindling a Bank.
A few years ago u well dressed man
presented himself at a certain national
bank uud laid dowu a check for $3,000.
It was signed by a well known whole
sale whiftky house, nnd upon the buck
were the words, "Identllieatiou waiv
ed." At the Biime time it well dressed
man entered the office of a live stock
firm at tho stockyards uud asked if ho
could wait In tho otllce, as he expected
a telephone message. He was told that
ho could, and he took n neat mar the
telephone.
Dowu In tho hank the paying teller
was asking who the holder of tho
check knew. He said not ninny firms,
as he was a stock dealer, hut If the tell
er would call up Sir. Smith of Jones &
Smith, the well known brokers at tho
stockyards, ho would Uud out that he
was all right The teller called for tho
tiumher, and when the ring answered
he asked for Smith. The man on the
end said he was Smith, and he at once
gave Brown, tho holder, tho amount of
tho check.
When it was discovered that the
check was a forgery, there was an aw
ful kick, as Smith said Brown was as
good ns gold. Smith declared that ho
had talked to no one, nnd tho result
was an argument between Smith and
tho bank teller. No ono knew about
tho accomplice answering the phone,
and tho result was that Smith took his
account from tho bank, and no one
ever knew who it was who answered

A Gift Not Appreciated.
Two well known clubmen were stroll
ing along Chestnut street the other aft
ernoon when a young fellow of rather
sporty attlro stopped them and at
tempted to borrow $5. "I've got to
have It tonight, and I'll give It back to
you tomorrow," he snld.
The man addressed looked dubious,
add his friend, who was not acquaint
ed with the woul.' lie borrower, moved
away, apparently to bo out of earshot
of the conversation.
"I don't think I can lend you the
money today," said the clubman.
"Como on. there's a good fellow,"
coaxed the other. "You'll got It back
tomorrow, sure."
"No; I won't lend It to you," "was the
reply, "but I'll tell you what I will do.
If you're so devilish hard up, I'll give
you ?3."
"All right; give it to mc," was the
unblushing rejoinder.
"You've got It nlrcady," said the
clubman. "Do you remember tho five
you borrowed from mo three months
ao? Well, don't bother about paying
that back. Nice day, isn't It? So
long!" Then ho rejoined his friend.
"In the last two years that fellow has
borrowed ST0 from mo at various

The Origin of Ihnnlx Park.
Tho origin of tho namo of Phoonlx
park has puzzled many scholars unac
quainted with tho Irish language. Tho
manor was called In the Irish vernacu
lar Fionn-ulsge, pronounced flnnlskc,
which signifies clear or fnlr water, and
which, articulated In tho brief English
manner, exactly resembled tho word
phceulx. The spring or well so called
from which tho park derives its
name still exists close to tho Dublin en
