There had been a time when Jack's evenings were not spent In nn aimless endeavor to make the hours fly faster, but that time was pan. The orchestra was crashing out the music of a comic opera as he stepped from the elevator, and he leisurely scanned the crowd that sat In groups around small tables sipping Iced drinks. All day the heat had been terrific, and even now, although a breeze stir red the foliage of the potted plants, a humid haze still lingered In the air and mellowed the rays ef the colored lamps that only partly dispelled the darkness. Their light was sufficient to catch tbo glitter In the jewels of the women nearest them, but there were nooks where the friendly darkness shielded the faces of lovers and encouraged ten der confidences. As Jack passed a number of these couples on his way to a scat he turned his eyes impatiently toward the center of the lnclosure where that part of the audience had congregated which had come to find amusement and forget the heat. There the murmur of voices mingling with the mnslc was continuous, and the deep tones of prosperous looking business men blended with the low laughter of women who, despite the beat, looked cool and fresh in their filmy gowns. Jack nodded to one or two people as he dropped Into a scat A waiter came for his order, and after he had given it Jack lighted a cigar and, leaning back, proceeded to take note of the groups nt the tables nearest him. It was one of his ways of obtaining diversion, tills studying of the people about lilin. lie liked to watch the play of expression on the various faces and to speculate about them. lie did not, however, enjoy watching lovers. Jack had a fine contempt for sentiment. His one love affair had been full of It, and it had ended badly. But that he had quite outlived his lovo and even his slight feeling of bitterness toward the woman who had been able to cause him so much pain Jack often assured himself. Thoughts of Edith brought no accom panying heartache, and his feelings for her now resembled the calm regard we entertain toward friends of former days from whom we have parted. But the affair had left him with a cynical dislike of anything that bordered on sentiment. It amused him to think how rich In the thing he now despised the days of his courtship and abort engagement had been. Edith baa told him once, with a pretty flush on her cheeks and a light In ber eyes, that the sight of vio lets always would recall to ber mind the time when be had asked her to be his wife. She bad worn those flowers that evening a monstrous bunch of them that be bad sent her and Jack remem bered how their perfume had filled the tiny drawing room and In some Inde finable way had seemed to blend with the soft light of the shaded lamps. It was pretty, that love affair of theirs, but, after all. It had been only an episode. Ho was glad that tbey had discovered their mistake In time, and he was able to look back upon that portion of bis life much as we remem ber a dainty play that lifts us for a time above the sordid cares of the workaday world. In the time he had known her Edith had roused him from his Indifferent at titude toward life. He always must feel grateful to her for that. Jack told himself, but the Bight of violets brought him no regrets. The return of the waiter with the drink be had ordered roused Jack from his contemplation of an Interesting group near him. The orchestra had brought the blatant music of the opera to a close and was playing an alluring waltz. , The waltz died away pn the summer air, and the murmur of voices became louder. Interspersed wdn tne popping of corks and the sound of Ice against thin glass. Jack's gaze returned to the scene be fore him. and It was at this moment that he caught sight of Edith seated at a table a few feet from blm. lie had not seen her since tbey part ed as friends a year before, and he smiled to think that he should be able to look at her now with so little per- tnrbatlon. lie did not believe she knew that he was there. At any rate she gave no sign of having seen him, and Jack watched her at Intervals as the figures between them swayed. ADnarently she was well and happy. Their brief love affair had passed over the surface of her life and left no rip ple. Jack looked at her critically, not ing her beauty and the taste displayed French Tansy Wafers, tne world's mnna remedy for Irregular and pain ful periods of ladies; are never failing and are. married laoiee jnenn French Tansy Wafers are the ODly re liable female remedy in the world; itn rwrtivl from Parle! take nothing tle, but Insist on genuine; In red wrappers with crown trade mark. In her attire. lie always bad admired ber dainty way of dressing, an. I ns for her beauty, that was undeniable. It Impressed him no loss vividly mm- than It had In those other days when be adore! her. Suddenly, without any preiiiimiMry tuning of Instruments, the urcliestni broke Into n catchy air tlmt htinuncd over with contagious Jollity and sent u ripple of merriment running through the audience. A queer ripple came over Jack's f:tee as he smiled with the others. That lit tle melody was full of memories for him. No matter how completely a thing of the past bis love for Kdlth might bo, that tunc always must bring her to his mltid. There was nothing sentimental about it. It was too frankly guy fur that, but it had nevertheless woven Itself luex tricably through all their courtship. It began with their first quarrel, an as sumption of authority on bis part, un warrantable as he looked at It now, and a flaunting of pride on hers. The next evenlug they had met In a box at the theater and had avoided each other's eyes until the orchestra struck up that air, which by Its Infec tious gnyety bad dispelled their ill hu mor and caused them to look at one an other and smile. After that they never heard It that their eyes did not meet with a look of understanding. It had ended many qttnrrels for them. "When you can hear that air played without meeting my eyes, I shall know that you no longer love me," Jack onco had said to Edith half 111 jest. The melody In question, chancing to strlko the keynote of public favor, be came popular, and they heard It every where. Sometimes In a pretty attempt at defiance Edltst resolutely would keep her eyes averted aud refuso to look at her lover, but she never could carry her willfulness to the end of the tune. Alwnys before the music stopped her eyes would meet his gaze. And tills was what the orchestra was playing now, and he and sho were sit ting only n few feet apart, with their love for each other quite dead. It was an odd coincidence Jack thought, smil ing. How hud throld tune, which be longed to a past summer, como to find a place among the popular airs of the present one? There seemed to bo boiuo Invisible link that connected them her and him and th.it fanciful, silly jig. Well, there would be no lovo message Unshed between them this time. Jack told himself this with no emo tion, and his cnltnness made him real ize how completely a thing of tho past his love was. lie glanced over to whero she sat. The crowd hud thinned out, and ho could see her plainly now. If the music stirred memories in Edith, the fact did not show In her face. Her eyes were lowered, but her Hps smiled as she listened to what ber companion was saying. Suddenly she raised her head and met Jack's gaze. Whether sho bad Been him before he did not know, but as she looked her smile faded, and for a few Beconds the two regarded each other steadily, gravely. Then Just as the music stopped some thing In tho man's face brought the girl's smile back again, not to her Hps this time, but In her eyes, and Jack knew that sho had not forgotten. Ho knew, too, that his pretense nt not cur ing had been a farce uud that he loved her still. It wns as a man lit a dream that ho saw Edith rise and move toward the exit, followed by ber escort. lack also rose, and In tho confusion, as n crowd Ulled tiro-elevator, he managed to speak to her. "When can I see you?" ho asked. "Tomorrow," sho answered without looking at him. The elevator stopped, nud they were separated again, but as Jack lighted a fresh cigar and went on his homeward way llfo had a different look, and the clatter of horses' feet as cubs darted swiftly over tho smooth asphalt beat time to a glad refrain that echoed and re-echoed In his heart, "Tomorrow, to morrow, tomorrow!"
