Judge 11 It Kincaid In bis paper, the Journal, ssys: The committee appointed by the county court to cx itnine the records of the various odicors ot Lane county from No vember 7, 1800, up to July 12 1000, consisting of L II Johnson,, J, II 1'ot'er and F M Wllklns, sub mitted their report last Monday. It shows that the warrants out standing July 12, 1000, amount to $00,047.50. The Interest now due on these warrants, which the com mittee did not oompute, makes tin present indebtedness ol Lane count about one hundred and two or one hundred and three thousand dol lars. Should the current expense continue at the same rate during the next nine months as they havt been, say 15,000 per month, and over 19,000 for June under the old board on account of election ex pensesand there will be another election this year in Novomber the Indebtedness when the next tax levy becomes due next April will be approximately $150,000, less the taxes now due and uncollected, whioh will be collected In the meantime, and a small amount of foes, all amounting to $25,000 to $30,000. This will leave a debt of $120,000 to $125,000 to be paid out of the taxes 1000 Mid subsequent years in addition to tho expenses ol carrying on the county govern ment as provided by law and the necessary road and bridge work. All of this will require careful management and strict economy if the debt shall be paid or reduced without increasing or by reducing taxes. PRICE OF WHEAT. Iteriater, July 21: In the county campaigns the democrats made a great howl about the low price ot wheat. We find by comparison that No 2 spring wheal sold In Chicago at 88 cents last month, as against 61f cent in June, 1800. btiould we make a change hack to the democratic administration and prirasf The price of wheat on a stock board in Chicago has nothing what ever to do with the actual pnoe of wheat in Eugene. Today's Register qu ites wheat in Eugene at 43 cents per bushel. Wheat on July 21, 1899, was quoted at 40 cents per bushel, a (all of three cents from last year. What has the Chicago market got to do with the Oregon farmer anyway T ?UHMONTUEWEDTnUIFBI I5AT1S1 ! 2 3 5 6 7 h JLJ0JLJ23 14 ! J3 J JZ- IS -2L it 23 24 25 26 27 26 J Portland Telegram, republican:) Governor Roosevelt may make a mistake if he continues to race about the country in a manner to suggest the chargo up Han Juan hill. The country in too big to be tampeded by cow-boy whoops and rough ridtr dashes. Kowevelt bb a rough rider in Cuba was an admir able figure, no doubt; but the peo ple soon tire of political mimicry of such a performance, ' how heroic the original one might have been. The war with Spain was populai unough in itself; but some of its .onscquenceB are not being enjoyed by the American people. If Gov ernor Roosevelt gains voteB for Mr McKinley, it will not loon account ol the Bantiago campaign. The Chicago fc Rock Inland road has put a ban upon cigarette smokers, sod will no longer em ploy anybody who indulget in that lorm of dissipation. One of the officials says that as a rule cigarette smokers are dull and half asleep most of tho time, and the road can not afl'ord to entrust tbeir property and trains in their keeping. Albany Democrat: The Eugene Register says wheat is netting near the dollar mark. Very near, lack inn about 55 cents f it. The ed itor must have dipped his pen in the lye kettle. Reports from the drouth-stricken section of Arizona are to the effect that every water-bole and most of the wells have gone dry. In con sequence cattle are dying by the thousands. Harper's Weekly, New York Sun and New York Times, which are being quoted from just now ns independent papers of democratic inclinations are owned by J Pier pont Mon-art, a republican. We may expect some interesting news from Cuba. There ore $3, 000,000 in the public treasury there, and quite a number of office holders are still at large on the island. It is suroly time that Aguinaldo was killed again or heard from again. It is difficult to rumember which was the last report. Tcrribio Cough.
