"This Is an example why some of the old men are pushed to the wall In the struggle 'or life aud a,hy It is not always the old pructitlune who is the best," said the youug man. "For man of apparently 70 to ask In the city of Washington such a question us thut gentleman Just addressed to mo is little short of criminal and well ex emplifies how woefully deficient some people are with reference to matters of common knowledge which ought to be in the possession of every schoolboy at the age of 10. "There are certain wrinkles of met ropolitan, life that some people seem never to graBp. Tbe running leeway of the street cars, their termini, the streets through which they pass and the districts they tap, the running time between Washington and the principal cities of the railroads, a thor ough knowledge of the environments of the city, . the major questions of tbe mail service and a thousand and one matters which. If not directly ac quired by learning should be by no sorption, ought to be at the finger tips of every person who enjoys the priv ilege of metropolitan life." Washing ton Star. Filed For Her Photo. Many a refusal to sit for a picture has been given because of a knowledge of advancing years and fading beauty. It remains for the Devonshire folk, however, to give a new point on "mak ing up" .for a sitting. S. Baring- Gould's "Book of the West" supplies the Incident. The looks of Devonshire and Cornish lassies are proverbial. A complexion of peaches and cream, a well proportioned body and well molded features are the characteristics. West country women, as they are, called, cannot forget they were once comely. A woman of 75 years was brought forward to be photographed by an am ateur. No words of address conld in duce her to speak until the operation was completed. Then she put her fin gers Into her mouth. She sold: "You wouldn't ha me took wi' my checks failed In? I Just stuffed The Western Mornin News into my mouth to fill 'n out." Batterr Plaoe. Battery place Is the traditional spot where, on May 0, 1020, the Indian own ers of Manhattan bartered It to the Dutch for baubles worth 60 guilders. . As early as 1093, there being a war with the French, "a platform upon the outmost point of rocks under the fort" was designated as a suitable place for a battery, and the council was called upon by Governor Fletcher to furnish "80 cords of stockades, 12 feet in length, for the purpose of building same." In 1733 a really Imposing battery, with a no less Imposing title, "The George Augustus Boyal battery," was erected by Governor Cosby, and "The Battery" has remained on our city map ever since, associated though It has been with tbe pleasures of peace to a much greater extent than with the art or the practice of warfare. New York Sun. squelchlna; an Bneore Fiend. The long, solemn gentleman with the piercing eyes tapped gently on the shoulder of the encore fiend In front of him. "Allow rao to present you," said he, handing the applauder a small paper package. "What does this mean?" asked the recipient wrathfully as he opened the package and found about (2 in dimes and nickels. "It means this," replied the solemn gentleman: "I have noticed your ear nest efforts to have everything twice. Therefore I have taken up this small collection In order that yob may come tomorrow Instead of trying to get your two performances In ono evening." Indianapolis Press. A Load Voiced Bird. A story runs that on a certain day. two men, one of them very deaf, were walking by the railway. Suddenly, an express train rushed by, and as It passed the engine emitted a shriek that seemed to rend the very sky. Tbe bearing man's ears were well nigh spilt, but the deaf man struck an ecstatic attitude. Then, turning to his suffering friend, he said, with a pleas ed smile: "That's the first robin I've heard this spring!" MADDENED ELEPHANTS the Unat Drutea Often Driven Wild by- Fearful Tusk Achea. "Zanzibar," suld ltoben CravKfoial, Is the gnau'st market for South .Afri can Ivory, which is brought there iu large quantities from the InU'rlor. This Ivory Is placed In large ware houses from which It is either Bold at ouco or el-v held therein for a better market. The man In charge of these warehouses was a very Interesting intruder, ail expert In Ivory, lie told me many curious things about It and imiKig others propounded tho following theory as an explanation of why ele phants go mad and occasionally run amuck. "Iu the warehouse were a pair of magniUceot tusks, measuring fully 14 feet from tip to tip. which Iu life must have been carried by a verttobJo Go Uah among elephants. The expert In showing me these tusks poluted out the fact that wullo one wns complete and flawless the other wns broken off at the point and showed deep scratches and abrasions throughout Its length. " Now.' said he, "If you will lok near the bnso you will fliid a hole made by decny that had struck Into tho nerves and given that elephant a toothache. And think what a tooth ache of toothaches a 14 foot tooth must have held. In his effort to relieve this pain tho elephant rubbed his tusk against rocks aud trees and dros'O it Into the earth, which mutilated It In the manner you see here. I have fre quentl. come across places whore an elephant has ripped up great spaces In the forest and torn down the trees, and I am positive that toothache was the cause of this frenzy. " 'An elephant in a circus going sud denly mad and killing his keeper is not an uncommon thing, but I'll wager that in nine coses out of ten If they would properly Investigate the matter they would Qnd that the brute's sudden frenzy spmng from so ordinary asuse as common, everyday toothache " Exchange. A TRIUMPH OF SURGERY. The Caae ot a Mnn Who Swallowed Hta Suapendern. A case recorded iu the Boston Med ical and Surgical Journal by Dr. M. H. Richardson Is a remarkable exam ple of the extraordinary feats In swal lowing foreign bodies sometimes per formed by men. A man, aged 20 years, was admitted to tho hospital, lie said that two weeks previously, while he was In a despondent state, ho hail endeavored to swallow his suspenders and had suc ceeded In getting down certain por tions, but how much ho had swallowed ho could not telL Ho did not complain of pain, but rather of discomfort un der the breast while eating. Tho food at times passed easily Into tho stom ach. At other times It wns regurgitat ed Immediately. Nothing could be seen in tho throat. With a probe sorno ob struction was felt- A sklagrnm showed a suspender buckle at the middle of tho chest and possibly another higher up. As tho chief danger in esophageal Impaction Is from ulceration into tho great ves sels, especially when the foreign body has sharp edges, and as fatal erosion usually takes placo, in two weeks or less, It was concluded that If there was any erosion It was sufficiently ad vanced to make even tho most careful manipulation dangerous. Tho problem was how to perform extractloa with out producing fatal hemorrhage. The throat was opened, and with a pair of forceps, a string attached to a brass ring and then half n suspender with two buckles and finally a third bucklo wore removed. A probnng was passed Into the stomach without meet ing with further obstruction. The wound was closed with silk sutures, and recovery ensued. Not an Indian. TT Q Tlnnl n 1 n 11 alt ,A ftf Wtl! IB. A. Among tho curious questions put to her by visitors are these: "I suppose you have a largo -collection of Indian scalps?" "Havo you ever been scalped your self?' "Do you keep buffaloes as domestic pets?" Once, on tho ranch, while sho was entertaining a foreign stronger, her father rode by, and she said: "There goes Colonel Cody now." Tho man looked at tho horseman long and anxiously. "Are you sure about It?" "Certainly. I know him very well indeed." "Well, I-declnro! I was never so sur prised In my life. Why, that man is a gentleman, and not an Indian at all." Don't Borrow. Only the other day a Boston firm of harks charged a man $5 for making out tho mortgage on a loan of 810 aud then charged him Interest A Lowell shark recently loaned a man 820 and charged him 83 for making out tho mortgage, and every mouth bo causes the man to sign a new mortgago and charges him 83 each time, besides tho regular rate of Interest thus bringing the Interest up to 8100 per cent per annum. The several mortgnges are not recorded since the first one, and every 83 the borrower pays goes into the lenders pocket Boston Traveler. Matter of Doubt. Dlx I want to congratulate you. Mix On what?
