Ob Speolmea That Llvea Barled TJn- dr tbe BlT.r Bed Uurlns tbs l)rr 'mod-India's ClIaiblBS Perch aad Slam'e Inlaad Traveler. Every one knows tbat most i1slia fcreathe iu a different manner trout that of tbe greater number of animals aud that they get the oxygen necessary for their life from tbe water and uot directly from the atmosphere. WatAr dissolves a certain amount ot oxygen. aud tbe gills of fishes take tbls out of tbe water as our luugs take It from the mixed air we breathe. The gills are bundles of fine blood vessels, cov ered by a delicate membrane tbat per mits oxygen to pass through It to the blood so loug as it is moist, but usual ly when a nsu is taken out of water the gills dry, and suffocation follows. The gills are very tbiu aud may be torn or injured by slight violence. Mud, sand, sawdust or any of the many sim ilar Impurities in water may lacerate or irritate them, so nature bas put Bi ters, like combs, Just in front of them to Btraln such foreign matters out of tbe water before reaching the real gills. These niters are called "gill rakers" and act as do tbe gratings put over gutters to bold back trash tbat might block them up, but the gutters grat- lugs get clogged sometimes, and so do tbe gill rakers. When this happens, the fish must die, and it Is well known tbat tbe sawdust Iu our streams boa been a chief factor In the destruction of our fresh water Qsb.es. But oil fishes are not dependent on their gills. Some of them, like our common carp and goldfish, come to the surface now and then to take in drafts of air, and eels cun travol over laud around dams or otber obstruc tions. These efforts are trivial com pared with those of some fishes found In other parts of the world. These are the luug fishes, or dipnoi, as naturalists call them, and the ac counts of them seem to border on the marvelous. In one group of these ani mals the "8Wlmbladder" is a kind of lung Instead of a mere float, as It is in most fishes, and in some strange fishes In India tbere is a hollow space In tbe skull that acts as a luug. the walls of It havlug clusters ot blood vessels about It, Just us the vesicles of our lungs have. These fishes can bury themselves deep In the mud when the dry season comes on and live through It till the rains fill the rivers again. A fish in tbe Gambia river makes a cocoon of mucus and mud, Iu which It has been brought from Sencgnmbla to London, where the cocoon was gently washed off and the llsb found to be living. The naturalist Nattercr dis covered a similar fish In tbe Amazon, but this one, tlio lepidosiren of sci ence, is oue of the rarest specimens In museums. In the United States there Is a fish, tbe bowfln, that can bo drowned by stretching a net below tbe surface of the water so that it cannot get to air. Dr. Hector, the government geologist of New Zealand, reported finding some fish about 6Vi Inches long among the roots of trees ot a depth of four feet In stiff clay. Tbe place where they were found was some 37 feet above tbe Hokltlka river, where there bad been a backwater during a time of flood. Tbe mud fishes are common in New Zealand, and tbe early settlers were surprised to dig up fish with their potatoes, as farmers on Long Is land are said to be in doubt whether their spades will unearth potatoes or clams. The most famous of tbe lung fishes Is tbe climbing pereli of India that bas often been found several feet up tbe mangroves. These animals migrate overland when their own streams fnl! and are captured In great numbers by the natives, to whom they arc great delicacies. Ceylon has several species of them. The Island Is dotted over with bogs of thick, chocolate colored mud, covered by a sod of reeds and grasses, and this mud teems with fish. The Cingalese clear off a space and wait till tbe Jish come up to fill their air bladder, when they catch them in strong dip nets. Sir John Bowrlng says that some lung flshes iu Slam go as much as three miles from water and that they have been seen flapping along a dusty road. The lung flshes constitute a wonder ful and Interesting group of animals and sbow tbe wide range through which nature can adapt creatures to their surroundings. Biology Is full of such Instances, but few are more strik ing than this. Washington Star. Remembered the One at Home. A Lebanon man tells tlio following for a fact: One day a Linn county farmer bought a banana at bis store, the first one be bad ever eaten. After finishing it be threw the peel on the floor. -After gazing at It a moment be picked it up and wrapped it In a piece of paper and remarked: "Guess I'U take that borne to my wife and let her see what a banana looks like. She never seed one." And the man bad an Income of sev eral thousand dollars a year. Portland Oregonian. Besar's Stataa. Whr n Did ot Vl.lt the Patient Who Waa l) Inn. Hospital doctors were under discus sion. Every man In the party had bad hospital expertcnt'o at somo time or another, aud each had a good word for bis particular doctor wheu tho dis cordant mau came In. "I Udl you what it Is," said he; "there aro somo mighty cold blooded men among them. I was Iu one of the big hospitals not long go, visiting a doctor friend of initio. It was night aud there was not much going on. There were four or flvo doc tors besides my frleud around, and some ono suggested a game of poker. Wo hadn't been playing long when a nurse knocked at tlio door and said. Doctor, I think tho patient in No. 8 is dying; won't you come down? 'les, right away,' said tho doctor. 'I'll draw three cards.' He filled his bond and played it, and he kept right on playing for about 15 minutes, when there came another knock at the door aud tho nurse said: 'lleally, doctor, that man's condition Is very serious. I know he s dying; won't you comer Tho doctor said: 'Yes, yes; oh, I forgot. I'll bo there in Just a minute I'll rolso you a quarter, doc.' Weil, he played that hand out anu tho next ono, and then he said ho guessed he'd, zo see the patient Tho nurse met him half way down tho stairs and told him tho man was dead. Now, what do you think of that?" "Well, they get hardened, they see so mnch suffering," sold one of the party apologetically. "If he'd gone when he was flret? call ed, he probably couldn't have done anything to save the man's life,'" said the second. "Yes," said the discordant man,' "but just as a matter ot form ho mlgbtmave quit after he filled that first hand!'' 1 "Ho might," assented all the party. "But tho man wns going to die -anyway." Now York Sun. A QUEER OCCUPATION. Gatherins: the Dovrn oC Cattails la the Jersey Meadows. One of tho queerest Industries has grown up on the Uackensack meadows, an otherwise apparently useless bog upon which It Is unsafe for man or beast to venture. Iu the summer cer tain parts of the meadows aro covered with a dense growth of cattails. They grow particularly, rank and large. Sometimes tbe tail, or furry part, is a foot or more loug nnd thick iu propor tion. The light, furry down is long and soft, bearing n close resemblance to down when first taken from tho stalk. Certain people always moro or less quick to see the advantages ot a wasto product have begun gathering the seed down from cattnljs aud arc making it a considerable business. Just before tho ice is gone in tlio spring Is the time selected. Provided with a largo Back in which to store the feathery products, the gatherer goes about among the tall flags, pulls oft tho down, deposits it In his sack and takes it home. It is not a particularly pleasant piece of work, because tlio little bits of down fly all over one, getting in the eyes, the nose, tbe mouth and cars, and completely cover one's clothing, nut it furnishes work, and men aud women dolt. It is taken from the sack, carefully spread where it will dry thoroughly, and it is then ready to bo used In pil lows or wherever else genuine atiimal down is advisable. It doesn't last long, because Its fibers lack elasticity, but for a time the pillow will be as soft as any. Those who gather It make reasona bly fair pay at It, though hardly enough when the danger and tho disagreeable character of tho work are considered. New York Commercial Advertiser. The Cat Catcher. The-dog catcher is not the only per son In tho city who is sincerely hated by both, man and animal. There Is a cat catcher as well, and he comes in for his full share of antipathy. Ho makes a living at the business, and a very good one. It is said. Few aro aware of the fact that pussy's fur is a very deslrabla article of commerce. There are any number of dealers In this city who are glad to pay all the way from 60 cents to $1 for a cat's skin, according to size and quality, Tbe method of catching tho unsuspect lng cat Is a particularly mean one. It Is a well established fact that cats are very fond of catnip and will troop after a man who carries a bundle of It This greed leads to the undoing of pussy, who will come to a stand if a bit of the herb Is thrown on the ground and Is thus made an easy prey. A bag and a chloroformed sponge do the rest, and many a household pet, tho disap pearance of which caused sorrow, can bo accounted for In this way. Phila delphia Press. A Well Merited Hetort, Ex-Assistant United States District Attorney Sutherland Touney of New lork wns graduated from the Colum bia Law school in 1875, when he carried off tlio first prize of $500.
