WAS A PLEASING CELEBRATION I: rained. Eugene celebrated. The sun shined. Eugene celebrated. Climatic conditions do not affect tbe average resident of tbe Willamette valley nor stop them in tbe pursuit of pleasure. Tbe Fourth opened up gray and cloudy, which thickened Into a mist that was drizzling, afterward into rain, Oregon rain. Early a goodly crowd began to arrive In the city, and as tbe deluge began standing room In stores, hotels and under awnings was at a premium. All weie good natured and awaited tbe pleasure of thegeneral committee as to tbe disposition and amusement of the crowd. It became apparent that the parade would have lo be postponed, and the date was changed from 10 a m to 2 p m. Tbe Fourth Regiment and pleasant Hill bunds were then called on and gave street concerts until the noon hour. Tbe parade was beld at tbe postponed hour and proved to be a sucess. Every care had been taken with all their floats, the Goddess of Liberty, Queen of tbe Celebration aud Uncle Bam looked their parts, tbe bands played stirring music Grand Marshal Mathews and aides acted promptly and nothing dragged. Tbe postponement did not deter from the pleasure tbe parade aSerded. ORATION AND EXERCISES. The exercises lu the park were very interesting and Instructive. Music was furnished by the two bauds and a chorus. Dr T B Ford delivered the invocation. Professor I M Glen read the declaration of Independence. Rev Mao H Wallace delivered the oration. It was masterly and patriotic It breathed tbe spirit of duty to country, omty to self, duty to God.
