Tbera are no days like the good old da The dari when we were youthful; When buminkiud were pure of mind And eve'h and dvetls were truthful; Befure a luve for eordid gold Became man'e ruung peeeloa And before etc b dame and maid became blevea to the tyrant fMhlon. . There are no girls like the good old girls Against the world I'd etake 'em As buxom and smart and clean of heart At the Lord knew how to make 'em. They were rich in spirit and common ernes, A piety all eupportln; Tbey could bake and brew and bad taught school, too, And tbey made the likeliest courtin. There ere no boys Uke the good old boys When we were boys together. When the grass was sweet to the brown bare feet That dimpled the laughing heather, When the pewes sung to the summer dswn Of the bee in the billowy clover, Or down by the mill the whippoorwill Echoed his night song over. There Is no love like the good old lore The love that mother gave us. We are old, old men, yet we pine again For that precious grace God save ua. So we dream and dream of the good old times, And our hearts grow tenderer, fonder, Aa those dear old dreams bring soothing gleams Of heaven away off yonder. Eugene Field. WELLINGTON'S DECISION. When the Moment to Strike Bad Come, He Did Not Hesitate. Badajos lies In Spain five miles from the Portuguese frontier. It, was the key of a situation. Wellington's chance was to strike nt Bndajos before tho French marshals could combine and crush him. His task was both In front of him and behind; him. He lacked transport; be lacked food for tho men; the soldiers were eating cassava root Instead of bread; the bullocks were weak and emaciated. AU this wns the doing of the parliament at home. But Wellington knew that the mo ment to strike had como, and be seems to have hesitated very little. . Placing no faith In the tongues of the .Portu guese, he made his pious with all pos sible secrecy. The guns, for the Blege were loaded on board the transport at Lisbon and consigned to a fictitious ad dress. But In the river Sndhao they were placed upon smaller vessels, and Anally they were again landed aud drawn by bullocks to Eloas, a post in the possession of. the allleB. Having stationed two-thirds of his force under General Graham and General Hill to prevent a most probable Interference by Soult and Marmont, Wellington ad vanced, reaching Eloas on the 11th of March, 1812.. lie had made the most Incredible exertions. , The stupidity of the Portuguese had vied with the stupidity of the govern ment at home. Wellington had been carrying the preparation for the cam paign upon bis own shoulders. If ho was to win Badajos, he was to win It with no help save that from gallant and trustworthy subordinates. He was 111 withal. Even his strangely steel like nature had bent beneatb the trou ble of preparation amid such Indiffer ence. But on March 10 Beresford, with three divisions, crossed the Gunrdlana on pontoons and flying bridges, drove the enemy's outposts and Invested Badajos. Stephen Crane In New Llp- plncotf s. THE CITY OF HONGKONG. It In One of the Moat Unhealthy Spots on the Globe. In spite of all the precautions that have been taken, the perfect sanitation of the city, the fine natural drainage, the cleanliness of the streets, . Hong kong Is one of the most unhealthful spots on the globe. With Its tropical heat the lofty peaks that half encircle It catcb the clouds that the rapid evaporation create, and they are squeezed like a sponge, the floods of rain pouring, down In streaming tor rents. .... i The bouses lack light, although they are built as well as they could be, with perforated ceilings, through which the air drculntcs, admitted from openings pierced bv -., outer walls. The floors are brilliantly waxed, carpets, owing to the great dampness, being dispens ed with. The great difficulty Is to se cure light and proper ventilation. . The streets are very narrow, and the tower ing walls of buildings opposite ob struct the light In front, while at the rear the courts of terraces crowded with foliage cast a heavy shade from that direction. In the gardens, while plants flourish luxuriantly, there Is no grass, but the ground is green with moss. Just as It grows In damp, shady places In cooler climates. The heat and the great humidity are destructive to health, and It Is doubtful If there Is a single normal liver In the whole of Hongkong. English women who come out with complexions of cream and roses grow thin and sallow. The Hongkong com plexion Is a startling grayish green, and the old resident has with this pal lor dark bluish circles under the eyes. The least exertion Includes exhaust tug perspiration, and peoplo become gaunt and thin. Boston Transcript The Hub's Finest. "O. Myel O. Mye!" again called the magistrate, more loudly, and lMllff Baraet hurried to tho bar and askrd the Justice what was offending his dig- Uity. Call O. Mye, Mr. Bailiff," ordered tho court, and ISitrnett repeated the words In tones that could be heard on the stmt Tho officer glared about for tho person who be thought was guilty of coutempt of court, and when a meek appearing man left his seat and walk ed toward the bar Harnett seized biro md declared him under arrest. I "Is this the man who Is guilty, your honor?' asked the bailiff. "What is your name?" asked the court, without heeding Barnett's quesH tion. ' "O. Mye," answered the prisoner, and the bailiff took a tighter hold on his col lar. "O. Mye?" queried the court. "Yes, your honor," from the prisoner. Then It dawned on the bailiff that he bad made a mistake. O. Mye, who sold his first name was Oliver, had been ar rested for begging on the street When the policeman who arrested htm told him that ho had abtiBed several persons who had refused him alms, his name was uttered by several In the court The prisoner likewise said "Oh, my I" when he got a fine of ?30. Chicago News. Hots MoOnllonffh lrfst a Bet. ' ? William II. Crnnc, the actor, once told this story on his old friend McCul lough. He said that one night In Snni Francisco ho was awnkened from a sound Bleep by McCullough pounding on the door of his room and In response to his sleepy Inquiry as to what was wanted responded: "Lot me In, BlUy. I want you to decide a hot" Once In, McCullough told Crane that he and the man who accompanied him had bet a $20 goldplece as to who oould stand the longer on ono foot and that Crane must refereo tho contest The preliminaries being arranged and tbo stakes deposited, time was called, and each contestant, lifting a foot from the floor, stood like a crane, while the real Crane lay back m a recumbent posi tion with a drowsy eye on the contest ants. The seconds dragged Into min utes, which again threatened to extend into the hour without either disputant giving up. Suspecting something was wrong, Crane waked himself up and examined his men more closely. The other man was wavering a bit, but McCullough was standing like a rock. Another five minutes went by, and then Craue, hop ping out of bed, discovered that McCul lough had one foot resting against an adjacent sofa and could have stood there for a week, If necessary. The other man won tho bet, but the Joke was on tho referee. Kever Admit Defeat. Never admit defeat or poverty, though you seem to be down and have not a cent Stoutly assert your divine right to be a man, to hold your head up and look the world In the face. Step bravely to tho front whatever opposes, and the world will mako way for you, No one will Insist upon your rights while you yourself doubt that you pos sess the qualities requisite for success, Never allow yourself to be a traitor to your own causa by undermining your self confidence. There never wns a tlnio before when persistent, original force was so much In demand as now. The namby pam- by, nerveless man has little show In the hustling world of today. In the twentieth century a man must cither puBh or be pushed. Every one admires the man who can assert his rights and has tho power to demand and take them If denied to him. No one can respect tho man wlto slinks In the rear and apologizes for being in the world. Negative virtues are of no use In winning one's way, It Is the positive man, the man with original energy and push, that forges to tho front Success. Aji Knar Conaotencea.
