OO04o00040OO00a I A YANKEE COAT. I By Prancts M. Hardy. 2 O -T 0OO000s0sOOeO0)0a Even a woman could have seen that Ned Moore was drawing small pleasure from his pipe. "I reckon tho doctor spoke the truth and I've got to do it, but It's tho devil's own luck. "Of course, I can't help the fever nor tho fever leaving mo weak as water, and I know I ain't fit and want rest "A fortnight's holiday? Well, I can manage the time, but how about mon ey? Spring Lake will eat un a SS0 hill in less than ten days." Hero pipe was abandoned for a mo ment while pockets were emptied. "Five. 10, SS0 nnd another "ii that's $40; this silver will tnnko about $2 ?42; more tliau I thought, but not euougu. sun, 1 can make It do, per- iiuiia; tiling 11 an, 1 must." eu .Moore s race cleared a moment. out omy ror a moment nat about clothes? I must have one now rig must, hut how? i uato to uo it but hang me, if I see nny other way. And the price was only $0; dirt cheap. Anyhow, who'll snow the rig Is secondhand? And If any ono docs guess what tho dovll do I care?" After this "declaration of Inde pendence" Ned Mooro put on his hat, put out bis plpo and hurried arouud tho corner to a secondhand clothing Bhop. Ho was a bundle of contrasts and contradictions, this haudsomo bachelor of 28. Ho could bully his pipes, dogs, fire; could sclntllluto wit and talk himself Into Bmlles or tears when alone. But lucking tho Bhelter of home and stimulus of solitude, ho was a different creature. Bashful- blushing like a young girl when spoken to and hopelessly bankrupt In strong talk of men or small talk of women, ho was generally regarded as cold, proud. awkward, morose. Ho was nothing of tho kind merely self conscious, that was all. But In his ense a small fault was euougu to work much mischief. Indeed this habit of self centering thought hnd made the poor fellow nu easy victim to fever and later delayed convalescence. And for this reason his doctor Insisted thnt when ho did visit tho soasuoro ho should stay at a fashionable hotel. 1 When Ned Mooro arrived at tho sec ondhand shop, ho made tho painful discovery that the blue sorgo suit ho wished to buy was built for n man twice his size. It was his first expe rience, however, with a secondhand clothing merchant aud constitutional bashfulness made him an easy victim. Ten minutes utter ho left that shop the owner of n tweed louugo suit, handsome, it Is true, but a combina tion of yellow nnd blnck nggressively horsy" in color nnd pattern, llo did not like tho tldug; In fact, posi tively loathed tho bizarre combination of color and cut Unfortunately the salesman snld It was tho thing for I1I111 to buy, and of courso ho bought It Moreover, ho was told to buy, and did, a pair of tan colored shoes and a straw hat encircled by a black nnd yellow ribbon. When Ned Mooro caught his first view of tho crowded veranda of tho Monmouth House, he wished he hadn't como, and nfter working his way through a bevy of pretty girls sur rounding the main door ho decided to skip dinner In tho big dining room and sup modestly in the small cafe. Twilight deepened while ho dined, nnd there came to tho ex-invnlld with tho gathering shadows a strange long ing for companionship. Indeed tho loneliness of the room soon grew pain fully oppressive. Through tho open window camo tho heavy salt nlr, Uenr lng to his cars the mingled talk and laughter of tho many people on the sands. Ho could seo the nfter dinner crowd drifting inilly nlong tho broad, sandy beach and, farther away, many Isolated "couples," busy, any ono could see, retelling that old story which re news Its youth with each generation. Had the old mood still held Ned Mooro In bondago ho would havo gone for n walk under tho pines across tho Inko and moped and smoked. Hut tonight new feelings possessed him. Ho was dominated by a newborn deslro to draw nearer tho heart of life to come In closer touch with that crowd of pret ty women down by the sea. And so he paid his bill, put on his hat and was soon one of the multitude. True, once or twice ho did feel a tri fle nervous as this new drawing toward the fair sex Increased In strength, nnd something whispered he was tnklng big risks. It was this feeling, perhaps, which led him to quicken his steps, nnd he was soon clear of tho crowd. But nt the very moment when ho fan cied bis feelings were well In hand he came suddenly Into the presence of the prettiest woman he hail ever seen. She was all alone and. half reclining on the sand, was gazing steadfastly across the sea to where the harvest moon slowly lifted out of the great waters. Before he knew what he was doing Ned Moore had stepped ttthlnd the girl, An Epidemic of Whooping Cough' Last winter during an epidemic of whooping cough my children contract, ed the disease, having severe coughing spells. We had used Cbamlierlaln's Cough Itemedy very successfully for croup and naturally turned to It at that time and found It relieved the cough and effected a complete cure, John K Clifford, Proprietor Norwood House, Norwood. Moreover, the young woman murmured loud enough to be heard atiove the rush of the surf: "Yes. darling'" .-veil .Moore could plainly hear his heart beating, but he couldn't, to savo his life, get a grip on words. So ho hugged the girl again. She seemed to read the right meaning lu his sllemie however, for she whispered: Mien a Heavenly night. Isn't It, sweetneart .' "I must sny something." thought Ned Moore, nnd ho was 011 the point of siu'aklng when another man spoko for mm: "Well, I'm darned!" And when Ned Moore looked up ho saw facing him a man about his own size and build a man whoso face was livid with passion. The Intruder didn't give Ned long to think, however, for ho burst out: "What Is this, Nell? What In tliuu-der"- Ile got no further, for. with n shriek, the young woman sprang nway from Ned Moore. When she faced him, she looked an enraged tigress. Sho was too nngry for words. "Answer me, Nell answer!" "Oh, It's nil n mistake a dreadful mistake!" cried the young woman. "Mistake? Nonsense!" "Xo. truth. Jack," nnd the pretty, tear stained face was lifted toward the angry man. "I was sitting here," sho ran on. her voice tremulous, "waiting for you, aud I had Just dreamed my way back to Inst summer aud was, oh, so happy, living over those denr. sweet days, when somebody, so like you, passed between me aud the sen, lining hi, oh, so true, with my sweet dream! Then an nnu stole around me the same old yellow aud black coat sleeve, and" "Why, bless my soul," cut In the an gry lover, eying Ned Moore Intently, "you've got on my old courting rig! I sec It nil now. Nell, denr, don't say an other word. It's all my fault. I'd no business to sell that denr old eourllng coat. It was rank sacrilege!" For an awful moment Ned Mooro hud been trying to settlo in his own mind whether ho was dreaming. To find he was not lifted n great weight from his mind, and ho joined his new no, qualntnnces lu a hearty laugh. Then he said: "And you forgive me, then, both of you '!" "Why, of courso wo do," cried Jack and Nell, nnd then Jack continued: "It's uiy skittish black aud tan court ing coat that played the deuce with both of you. How did you get hold of It?" "Bought it secondhand, hut I'll tnnko you a present of tho whole outfit as soon ns I get hack to my own modest clothes. Honest, I hnveu't known my Bolf since 1 put the wild rig on." Jack said he didn't want the coat, but his swoothoiirt timidly remarked: les; lake It from hhn. Jack. You must. I'll never feel quite sure of my self while that cont belongs to nnolher man." Ned Moore found something more than health nt the seashore found his heart. And he relumed to New York n new man. Something, time soon testi fied, had opened bachelor eves to the loveliness of woman, the loneliness of bachelor life, for lu six months he mar-rlod-mnrrlod and settled down to hard work nnil home life. Hut for reasons tho nature of which he did not cjplaln to his Ilitle wife he never parted with his own courting coal, even when lis days of uctlvo service had departed. Chicago Tlnios-Hornld. I'luna lilrna. The Duchess of It had an old Presbyterian nurse who was once per suaded to attend tho beautiful church they had built. The duchess afterward asked her If It was not very beautiful, nnd she snld, "Oh, yes, very!" "And the singing." said the duchess, "was not that lovely?" "Yes, your grace," sho snld. "It was lovely, but It's au awful way of spending the Sabbath." A Scotch lady and her gardener used to worship together, not agreeing with any form of church doctrine. A friend remonstrated with her and asked, "Do you renlly think you nnd your gnrdener aro the only two real members of tho true church on earth?" to which Hhe replied, "Wcel, I'm nao sue sure o' John." A Hcotch minister from a huge town once visited nnd preached lu n rural parish and was naked to pray for rain. He did so, nnd the rain came lu floods nnd destroyed soiuu of the crops, whereupon one elder remnrked to nn otlier, "This comes o' Intrusting sic a request to a meenlster who Isnn nc qnentlt wl' agriculture." Hhe wore for the audience a dress of reddish vloh-t velvet, the color of a rich nuiethyst.
