Fourth Regiment Band.
Tbe Fourth Regiment baud held its
first rehearsal last night. Tbe boys
are playing with any old instrument
tbey can scrape op at present awaiting
the arrival of tbe new Ber.onr. As
tbey are all old band men, however,
tbey are dropping Into tbe
work In fine bbape. The . band
expects to furnish the major part Of
tbe snualo for the Fourth ofjulyeele'
bratlon in this olty and entertain the
encampment on July 7 in fit condition
to inspire tbe regiment. A sew lot of
mu.io ordered will probably arrive by
the time of next praotloe, wbloh will
be Monday night, June 25.
Lakeview Rebuilding.
The Lakeview Rustler gives a list of
a number of new business house, that
will be built tbi. summer to take tbe
place of those destroyed by fire recenly.
Tbe Rustler says:
"Work has begun In earnest Monday
June 11, on many of tbe new buildings.
"We may not celebrate tbe 4th of
July this year, but, we shall never
forget tbe 22 of May.
"Dr Daly is ooinmenolng tbe con
struction of five brick buildings on
grounds recently vacated by fire."

Letcher Is now engaged at Lexington,
Vs., where he has recently been of
fered a responsible position, but whloh
he deolined on account of its onerous
duties. He has recently brought to a
BUGcesful termination a very diffloult
engineering feat. It consisted of tbe
extension ot the foundation of a large
stone church to the bedrock, several
feet below the present foundations.
The walls wbloh were from three to
five thick, and from 25 to 60 feet hlgb,
were undermined, and for tbe earth re
moved, tbere was substituted solid
masonry. The work was accomplished
without makl::g a singls oraok In the
wails, or in anyway disturbing tbe old
foundations of the struoture."

The Burns News of the 12th Inst
says: General Manager Bancroft,
General Freight Agent iiccles, Chief
Surgeon Pinkerton and Livestock
Agent Tuttle, all of the Oregon Short
Line Kallroad Company, spent yester
day in Burns, having come out from
Ontario by private conveyance. They
are making a hurried trip through this
seotion, presumably to gain an idea of
the prospective railway trafflo It con
tains. It is generally thought, but
not absolutely verified, that tbe survey
ors now at work in Malheur canyon
are in the employ of tbe Short Line,
and tnls, with tbe fact of tbe visit of
tbe above-named offioials, leads to the
belief tbat tbat road has construction
operations in view which are not given
out publicly. Tbe party leit Burns
this morning tor Sbsnlko, via Prlue
vllle, and at the railroad town will
meet tbe manager's private car and
return to Salt Lake next Monday
Tbe party was favorably impressed
and indeed surprised, with tbe cond
tions tbey found in Harney oounty
and In the thriving town of Burns,
In tbe event a line is built westward
from Snake river it will find the town
of Burns in its path. Mr Bancroft
will return bere next fall, when he
will be able to make more thorough
investigation of tbe country's resources.
