Pacific overland trains was killed to
day by falling wood. Tbe accident

and Jefferson, while loading the
engine tender. Phillips was about 28
years old, and Ib thought to live at
Roseburg.

Eugene to Have the Fourth Rcgi
mcnt Musicians.
It has been definitely settled that the
bsnd of the Fourth regiment, O N O,
III be located in Eugene. Col Geo O
Voran has forwarded the enlistments
of the musloians to the military toard
and has also issued a requisition for
the uniforms. He has been advised
hat the board will decide upon a
military band uniform for the two
regiments, tbe bauds to be clothed the
same. The Fourth regiment baud
will likely order in addition a white
duck uniform for summer service.
The lustruments will be ordered
within a few days aud the boys
expect to be ready fjr creditable service
at tbe euoampment to be held In
Salem, July 7-17.

A CHAPTER OF HORRORS.
Child's Head Cut Off aud Eight
Men Killed.

says.
A terrible accident occurred near
Htockbrldge, ou tbe Oneida Indian
reservation, which resulted In tbe
killing of eight men aud one child.
According to tbe story at, brought In
trom the reservation, a woman went
out into tne yard where several little
ohlldreu were playing, caught a ohlok
eu and chopped oft its head with an
ax. She left the ax lying ou tbe
grouud. Immediately ou her return
to the house one of the child re n
suggested they play ohlokeu, and pro
ceeded to carry out tbe suggestion . A
ohlld was seized and Its head plaoed on
the block and hacked ott.
A number of men were engaged on a
derriok In the yard, raising heavy tim
bers lu the erection of a barn. When
the men above uotleed the ohlld being
beheaded, they became panlo-strloken,
and In tbe oonfualou, heavy timber
wbioh were being raised, fell with au
awful crash, killing eight men.

Last to Leave Dawson.
Between the breaking up of ice In
the Yukou river and tbe resumption
of steamer navigation trade to and
from Dawson is hazardous. The
rJkagway Alaskan of May 26 has this
about the last arrivals by that route:
A Lobley, who has arrived In
Bkagway, was one of the last men to
leave Dawson for the Coast this season,
an.l he recites a tale of hazardous
experiences. He started out with a
horse and sled, venturing to make
the trip over the wakening and
dangerous ice. Forty miles this side
of Bewyu hli horns broke through the
ice Mr L'lhley went lu with It, aud
was severely cut about tbo faoe by
the ice. Hu scrambled out, cut the
tugs that held the horse to the sleigh,
aud the animal punk tn lis death in the
chilling, sweeping stream. The Bled
had remdned on the edge of the
broken loe, -ife. Mr Lobley walked
from the prune, of the accident five
miles to a roudhouse
"A fier drying out," said Mr Lobloy,
I took the Dtllou trail to Hoolohikoo,
then followed the C D cutofl to Lower
La Barge, and then followed tho shore
25 miles alongihe Fifty-Mile River to
White Horse, theuce by the railroad
grade to Caribou and Into lieu no tt
over the Ice. Tbe hardest work was
along the Fifty-Mile River. It was
a terror. 1 was 14 days coming out
from Dawson."
