Last night County Clerk Lee, Jut-

began the woik of canvassing tie
ofllclal vote of Laue counly, but after
oauvassing the vote of 20 precincts
found that the judges of election In
Camp Creek and Glentena products
bad neglected to place a tally sheet In
the returns, and thereupon the board
adjourned. Tbey will meet at 8 pm,
Saturday lo complete the canvass
The only Interest attaching to the
formality of canvassing the vote Is the
closeness of the oounly Judge content.
Of oourse it Is to be expected that the
returns oomlng Into the party head
quarter! would have some errors, but
these are as a rule miner, except In a
olosevote. In the precincts canvassed
by the board so tar, Kluoald gained
seven In Fall Creek precinct, and Knox
gained one vote In one of the Eugene
precincts, giving Klncald a nut gain
of six, or leaving him at piesent eight
behind.

Shell Rock Grade. Travelers
familiar with the McKenzis road will
remember the small waterfall at Shell
Rock Grade. It Is a small quantity
of water, but It falls down a rocky
slope several feet almost perpendicular,
at the upper side ot the road. The
road lied has been built op, and on
the lower side there Is a bank of
several feet below which the side of
the hill Is steep and rocky. It Is an
Ideal place lo frighten a horse, and
not a few accident! have occurred a(
that point. Now after these many
years some good Samaritan of a road
supervisor has hauled a tree trunk,
in sections, and placed It along the
lower side of the road making It Im
possible for a fractious team to throw
a wagon over on the dangerous rocks
below.
Crook County. Ou the county
ticket, Smith, democrat, was eleoted
by 171, Conglelon, democrat, for
sheriff, 161 ; fiealey, democrat, for
commissioner, 227; Bogll, republican,
for school superintendent, 118; Poln-
dexter, democrat, for treasurer, 107;

The republican legislative tloket

cellaneous freight for Cape Nome: .

animals will have as comfortable quar
ters as any that have ever been given

weighs about 2400 pounds, and
measures three feet six inches expanse

The Hessian Fly.

"Sotnoof i no farmers who havo fall
grain In the vicinity of Faimingtou,
Eastern Wushlngtnn, are complaining
of the damage being done to their
orops by the Hessian lly (Ceoidomyla
destructor.) This Is n dipterous or
two-winged Insect, tho larva of which
often proves extremely destructive to
wheat in this country. It Is black
with dusky wings, darker at the baso,
pale-brown legs, with black and hairy
antennae. There are two distinct
nroods each year, the larva of one
brood living at the roots of the plains
throughout the winter, while those of
the other are found In the lower joints
of the straw about the end of spring
or beginning ol summer.
"The roots of the wheat affected by
the Hessian fly are found to be decayed
or moldy, while the blades and atalks
are partly n llted and shriveled. The
plant has a sickly appearance at first,
and It soon withers and dies.
"Thus far only the fall sown grain
seems to suffer from the effects of the
Insect, but It Is already evident that
the yield of grain In this vicinity will
be somewhat reduced on account of
this destructive pest."
Is it possible our fall wheat has
attaoked by the Hessian.
