County Clork Lee put the name of
W T 1'attison, Prohibition candi
ilnto for county treasurer, before
that of A S PAttorson, Gitiions'
nominee for the same office,
although alphabetically considered
the "e," fifth letter in ratt(e)rson'i
name, takes precedence over the
"i," fifth Uttor in Pattiion's
name.
Do jou know why County Clerk
Lee made such an arrangement?
Simply in hope that some voter in
reading down the ballot and mark
ing his choice would plaw the
cross that indicates bii vote in front
of W T l'attisau's name, thinking
he was voting for A S PAtterson,
the Citizens' nominee. And, un
doubtedly, "Abe" Patterson will
lose not a few votes that were in
tended for him.
County Clerk Lee is responsible
for this outrage. Men who love
open, honorable dealing and im
partial compliance with the law by
sworn officials should remember
this open disregard of the plain
law and when they cast their
ballots Monday make a cross before
the name of Harry M. Milllorn,
Citizen's candidate for county olerk.
And he oareful to make your
cross mark before the name of
A- S. Patterson if he is vonr choice
for county treasurer. Do not be
misled by similarity of names.

TAYLOR, OR THE REGISTER?
The Register of Friday morning
is responsible for an ngly insinu
ation against the Republican can
didate ior oounty commissioner.
In a list of candidates showing
"what an X will do at the June,
eleotion" it bas this notice' of the
Republican oandidate: . . t
"'16 X J L Taylor. He is not as
rioh as some men but be owns a
homestead whioh together with
improvements is worth several
thousand dollars. We oould not
elect a better man for oounty oom-
mistioner." ,
The Register does not state the
value of improvements, but they
ought to form a considerable part
of the "several thousand dollars."
As homestead improvements are
assessable the name as other prop
erty, and Mr Taylor's assessment
only shovB taxable property to the
extent of 36 sheep, on which there
is a special tax of 86 cents, an ex
planation is needed. ,
That explanation most probably
would not Bhow that Mr Taylor
has made any false return to the
assessor. It would only show that
the " Register has indulged, in
pleasant, but harmless exaggeration
in its hopeless task of bolstering
Mr Taylor up so the taxpayer ,oan
swallow his oandidaoy, "36 sheep1"
and all.
