The anchorage holding Is poor, and
once the waves beat the vesiels shore
ward there would be no hope of evei
getting them of! again.
Tills constant battle with the aess,
by which steamers are kept plunging
at their anchorage, ia a great strain
upon them, aud only the atauuchesi
are able to stand it. Tbe unsound
vessels now headed north, If so fortu
nat as to eet that fir. will soon be
pounded lo pieces by the hammering
of the waves. If the weather is good
all the time they might be able to
weather It, but the first blow will
drive them ashore, as they are not
strong enough to put to sea iu the
teeth of even an ordinary JJehring Hea
storm. The first steamer returning
will probably report several such
disasters
The loss of passengers will not
likely be heavy, as most of them can
be landed safely In surf boats even
during a heavy tlow. There are noi
dangerous currents, and whirlpools
like In the narrows of the Inside route
to Bkairway, where the Clara Nevada
and other Klondike craft Bank without
an Instant's warning.
