Mr. Itedbolt strode briskly across the room. A moment later ho was in the private office. Young Mr. Dewhurst, -who bail man aged the business since tho death of his father, gave him a furtive look ns he entered aud then turned hurriedly to a buudle of correspondence by his side and Belected a letter with an air of malicious satisfaction. The ball was opened by Mr. Dew hurst unfolding a cantankerous com plaint from an unimportant customer. It was the merest trifle aud unite un worthy of the occasion. Nevertheless Joe Rcdbolt was by no means surpris ed at the tone adopted. For some tluio past tho smallest opportunities had been seized for fault finding, and bo knew by Instinct that the climax had been reached. How do you account for this blun der?" asked Mr. Dewhurst suspiciously. His clnj-k gave a simple, straightfor ward explanation, which, to a reasona ble man, would have been sufficient But Mr. Dewhurst was not In a rea sonable humor. It appears to me, then, that you nre not lu any way to blame, Mr. Itedbolt," he said cynically. "I think not" "You never make a mistake?" "Not very often." 'Who Is to blame, then?" There was a moment's Bllence, and tho two men looked Into one another's eyes. "You are, sir," said Itedbolt respect fully. "I acted under your Instruc tions." This appeared to give the unworthy little tyrant his opportunity. 'iou are more than half Imperti nent," he said roughly. "I give you my word that I dou't In tend to bo so," said Itedbolt, with per fect good temper. "Perhaps not, hut I'm tired of it. You forget your proper position and have crossed my will In several ways." Mr. Redbolt colored rather painfully, and bis principal continued, with a smile of spiteful triumph: "You understand what I allude to 7" The clerk bowed slightly. "Then I think you hod better look about for another situation." "Shall wo calculate the mouth from last Moiulny?" Inquired Joo Itedbolt In a perfectly even, matter of fact voice." "Eh yes," said Mr. Dewhurst "Hut I won't ask you to continue your work here." With that he pushed across the table a little pile of coin which had been counted out already, clearly Bhowlng that he Intended from the first to make use of the opportunity. For the first time Joe Itedbolt looked angry. It was adding Insult to Injury to send him away at a moment s no tice, as If he bad disgraced hlniBelf. It was tho more outrageous because be was a distant relation of tho Dew hursts by blood. Tbe two young men had been for a short time at school together. They had entered the firm together, and Redbolt had worked his way up by sheer ability under old Mr. Dcwburst's eye to a responsible position. Naturally they knew the same people and to some extent visited the same houses, and It was In this way that Dcwhurst's Inherent Jealousy had rip ened Into positive rancor, for tbnt there was a member of tho fair sex at the bottom of It Is almost obvious. The Innocent cause of the trouble, little dreaming of the mischief she was creating, had thoroughly enjoyed the rivalry of the two men, as every daughter of Eve Is bound to do, and she had not made It quite clear which of them was to be favored, which l eertnlnlv a woman's privilege. But Joe Redbolt was generally be lieved to be the lucky man, and Dew hurst had vented his unmanly spite by a ihousnud annoyances In tho ofricc, However, in love, as In war, It is the iinninectcd that often happens. Joe Itedtiolt nroposed and was refused nolnt blank. Now, most men, when they see a dan cerous rival put out of court, bury their animosity and even become gen emus. But this was not the case with t reu Dewhurst Petty annoyances develop ed rapidly into daily Insults until the morning, os we hnve seen, ne naa f,.iinl an excuse to cut his former riionlfollow adrift Joe Redbolt picked up tno pile oi coins, counted them deliberately and nni ihotn in his Docket Vow. Fred Dewhurst" be said huskily-, "we nre no longer master and man. o that I can say what I think. iknehiint lonkfd rather alarmed and drew a mall silver bell near to hie $lde. "Oh, dou't Iw fi-lghtvuml," said Joe, with a smile of amusement. "I'm not wing to thrash you! It wouldn't be fair to hit a man of your slice!" Mr. Dewhurst tried to sneer, but ouly looked mightily relieved. "I want to tell you what I think of you." said Joe. "lio ou," said Dewhurst, w ith a grin. "Seeing that you've had the worst of It all through, I suppose I mustn't ulnd a few spiteful words!" "1 want to tell you thnt you're tho meanest cad I've mot, and If that poor firl marries you I'm sorry for her!" "In fact, you're so sorry," snld Dew hurst, "that you'd even marry her yourself. Capital! And, now you've said enough, I'll wish you good morn Inn," With a mighty effort of self re straint, Joe pulled himself together, and. resisting tho Impulse to knock him down, swung out of tho room. He had lost everything the girl ho loved and the means of earning his living. Ho waa alone In tho world, with uo prospect but that of commenc ing life again lu some counting house, aud Then suddenly he remembered. Ouly two nights before he had attend ed drill at the headquarters of his vol unteer corps. Tho men had been ask ed which of them wished to Join ths C. I. V. for the front He thought of the glow that had burned through his veins, how he had longed to offer him self nnd had only been prevented by his feeling of obligation to his old frlcnuBsasViness. Now he was froel That settled It Old England was In need of help from men such as he. Ho was as sound as a bell In wind and limb. He had done his turn at volun teering and could shoot more than a little. Within half an hour his name was entered ns one of those who were ready for service at tho front, and be was or dered to go before tho doctor. That geutlemnu laughed at him. "If we get 1,400 men as fit as you are," he said, "we shall do well!" Having successfully passed all the tests nnd been duly enrolled as one of the City of Loudon Imperial volunteer corps, ho felt slightly easier In his mlud. It must bo confessed that ho was In thnt pleasaut frame of mind when a man firmly believes that there Is no body to grieve over him and finds a morbid pleasure lu tho prospect of a soldier's grave. Most of us get these nttneks of de spondency some timo in our lives, and, to tell the truth, It lasted a very short time with Joe Itedbolt. After n few days of hard drill ho had lost sight of tho possibility of getting killed and wns looking forward to making things ns unpleasant ns possible for tho ene my. At last tho final moment enme. Ho hnd nttended the services nt St Paul's aud sung tho national anthem uutll ho was hoarse. He had been slapped on tho back by hundreds of warm hearted but heavy handed citizens. Ho hnd even fought his way successfully through a mob of enthusiastic patriots all the way from Iluuhlll row to Nino Elms, where he was one of the Urst to arrive. There stood the train waiting to take them to Southampton. There, too, stood tho long suffering band, and every minute groups of breathless, ex cited men lu khaltl, who had also fought their way through the crowd, rushed on to the platform. Of course It wns all over. Thero was nothing to be dono but get Into tho train and say goodby to old London for months perhaps forever. Oneo more a gloomy senso of loneliness came upon him. Everybody elso had a chum or a relative to see hlin off. And then an angel camo from heaven? Not quite. But an earthly angel appeared In the shape of a slight form lu a long, black cloak, who was pushing her way feverishly through tho crowd, eagerly scannlug the faces of all the "gentle men In khaki." Then their eyes met and in a minute ho was clasping In his arms the girl who had refused him a month before and In whoso presence ho had always been so Bhy that he had never yet dared to press her hand. low had It happened? There seemed no need, and certainly no time, for ex planations. Why had ho accepted her foolish "no" when she never meant him to? She always thought he would speak to her again. Why had he been so awkward and brusque In the way ho had asked her? He had given her no chance to say "yes." And It was only last night alio had learned what had happened from Dewhurst s own lips and she had cried all night at tho mischief she had done, and wouiu no forgive ber? And did be still care for her a little bit? "Take your seats, there!" roared an officer. It was not the time for mock mod esty, with her arms around nis neck nnd tear stained cheeks pressed to his. she promised to wait for hlin. "God bless you!" he whispered. "And bring you back to me," she an swered. And then, with cheers and whistles and the band playing "God Have tbe Queen" and men shouting and laugh ing nnd crying, tho train moved out and tlie City's Own was en routo for the front Answers. n micicn imnuu ULMOOII ILL) UULUt.ilii Notiot UDttcrtliu htwl not to exce-txl fiv.
