circulated for the sole purpose of mis
leading tbe people and diverting their
attention while the gang are getting
n their work on a condding public wto

schemers. Tbe ex-Secretary of State
did a vast amount of work for the State,
such as had never been done by any of
bis predecessors und wbich be was not
required to do, among which was tbe
compiling and writing of a Political
and Olllciul History aud Register of Or
egon, covering a period of 75 years. As
a recognition for compiling tbe history
tbe Legislature passed a joint resolu
tion giving bliu 600 copies of the book,
which shows bow these copies came
"strangely" Into bis possession. Vitu
peration and vilification is poured out
by wholesale for receiving pay for all
commissions, when out o: hundreds of
pardons and reslorations to citizenship
be made every one free, and out of
hundreds of complimentary commis
sions au6 pel haps more than a thous
and military commissions not a dozen
were ever osked to pay anything but
were all made free. All tbe drivel and
rot about leaving tbe party and Tongue
never having been for silver need no
reply. Tbey refute themselves. The
ex-Secretary of Stale bad honesty and
courage enough to stay with bis convic
tions and professions on tbe silver
question, aud iu doing so sacrificed tbe
best olllce in Oi-cgou. Tongue and tbe
party that supports blm deserted and
betrayed their convictions, if they ever
bnd any, and their friends, to get tbe
offices. Everybody with a grain of
sense knows these statements to be true.
Ibe Oregoninn has recently reprinted
Tongue's free silver leltor, wbich is one
of the best ever published in Oregon
on this subject. The ex-Secretary of
State never deserted or betrayed bis
party or auything, living or dead, but
the purry und Tongue and all of bis
kind are the deserters and betrayers of
their oft repeated professions and of
tboso who befriended them. They
have and will betray any party, any
cause, any person or any community, to
get into olllce and stay in.
