COMPARISONS. No question has - ever been raised as to the efficiency and com petency of ex sheriff Johnson. Yet a comparison of the work done by Mr. Johnson and Sheriff Withers in criminal proceedings in the Eugene justice courts redounds not a little to the ored it of the present Lane county sheriff. During the four years Sheriff Jobnson held oluce Eugene oon stables were paid 8 1 .400;3S for foes earned in criminal work. Dur ing the past 22 months of Withers' term the Eugene constable received only $206.60. No wonder Con stable Fleoman resigned. Sheriff Withers did not turn over his warrants for arrest, service of sub poenas, etc, to the coustable, but did the work himself. That was the reason Constable Fleeman resigned a position that bad paid fair wages and was sought after while the former sheriff held the office. Allowing that same proportion for oonsUble fees for a four year asm term the constable would reooivn only $451.20 against the $1408.89 of the previous four yearn' twin. But the entire amount be saved to the county as no person will qualify as countable while Sheriff Withers holds the place. There are other savings on this score. Officials working under fees, like constables, do not con eider the taxpayers when costs are in question. It is their business their profits depend upon the bunting up of criminal otses. And while the constable might get one dollar out oi it in the way ot Tees the county might be put to an ex pense of twenty dollars through costs of witnesses and other pro ceedings, costs both in justice and cirouit courts, many of tbe cases brought in the former having to run their course in the latter court. Sheriff Withers is on salary, and while be will not ebirk necessary criminal work may be depended upon not to hunt up or involve the connty in petty and trivial justice court criminal proceedings that might be noted only by the size of the bills of costwbioh tbe taxpayers would be called upon to foot. COMPARISON OP LANE AND DOUGLAS COUNTY CLERKS. Douglas county bas a Union county clerk, who was elected on a pledge to reduce tbe expenses ot tbe office. Unlike the Lane county official he was willing to do the work of the office with his regular force without putting the county to needless expense by providing a place for another deputy to attend exclusively to the registration of voters. The Roseburg Review makes a comparison of the methods employed by tbe Lane county Re publican olerk, and the Douglas connty Union olerk, as follows: "Down in Lane county tbe Re publican incumbent in the olerk'tt offioe employed an extra deputy, the county paying him ?oi)a month to register vuters. Here in DouglaB Mr. Gazley bas not obarged up a cent against the county for this extra work. This is another item that tends to show that the Union officials are keeping their pledges of economy to the people." The Review should remember that Douglas county is not blessed with a $125,000 debt like that mainly oontraoted during the past four years of Republican adminis tration in Lane county. VOTERS' DAY. Those thirty voters, tbe names of whom County Clerk Lee refused to place on tbe register, although they had complied with the law by registering before a duly qualified notary within the time allowed by law, will bave their day in oourt Monday, Juno 4. Tbey will not lose their votes, but the arbitrary action of the oounty olerk will cause eaob of them tbe trouble of scouring six qualified eleotors to vouoh on oath as to the qualifications of the voter. Con siderable trouble, and all to please the whim of a self-constituted judge. While tbey are bunting up wit nesses County Clerk Lee will be sufficiently advertised to make amends for alt trouble.
