Iu three directions these canyons cut deep trenches through the luounialuB aud high peaks towered above. Wire fences at the mouths of the canyons enclosed the small level plat of groUDd upon which the caniu stood. A large spring of water boiled up by the side of the cabin, and tall, waving grass jtrew all over the plo: of grouud ex tending even upnu the sides of the mountains, Ii is mile s and miles from this pluce in any direction to either grass or water aud this spot is truly an oasis. "We found the latchstring to the cabin door hanging outside. Upon euterlng we found it to be a regular storeroom. There were stacks of flour. bacon, sugar, salt, lard, fruit, syrup, grain, hay, coal oil, in faot, everything that man or beast could desire. This bountiful store out lu the mountains of the desert many miles from anv keeper, and nothing but a cotton strlBg as a fastening for the door. "How diflerent are the ways of civ ilization, where cabins are bolted and Yale tlmg locks do not protect property 1 The meanest men that ever went upon the desert would not use more than he actually needed at this supply house.
