Railroad Ties. Tho renewal of
ties costs tbe railroads of tbe country
an Immense sum of money annually
The Southern Paolflo began tbe treat
ment of ties by tbe creosote process at
Latham, Lane county, iu 1805, and
are keeping an accurate account of the
renewals in order to be able to judge
of the efflcaoy of their preservative.
Tbe year Is marked on the end of eaoh
tie. Tbe average life of a tie is from 4
to 8 years In tbe Willamette valley.
In Southern Oregon ties last at least
two years longer, the Increased term
of service being due to tbe dryer
o'.lmate. After four years tbe life
of a tie is largely exhausted, and re
leases the spikes, while the tie may
be good for often two yean more
service, before becoming too soft for
track service.
