The garden was ablaze with May

choly. A gnarled apple tree tapped playfully
at tho closed shutters of one of tho up
per rooms nud even went so far, under
extreme provocation from tho wind,
as to poko some of Its blossom laden
twigs between the ramshackle slats.
Ur. Eaton, who walked up tho
straight path through tho sunshine,
could uot restrain a sigh of pleasure at
the beauty of the scene. Young and
strong and healthy, life to hlin was
good nud delightful, though at that
very moment he might bo hurrying
Into tho presence of denth.
A pale young woman opened the door
iu respouse to his knock, and without
any form of greeting ushered him into
the chilly hall and went before hlni up
the stalls to the floor nbovo.
"He is very 111, my poor little boy,"
she said as she opened tho door of a
bed chamber. "Very, very 111, I fear."
Tho doctor stepped into tho room.
Ho stopped for an Instant uutll ho
could accustom himself to tho general
dimness. The womau caught his arm.
"Here," she whispered, and drew
him toward the bed.
The youug man took the child's tiny
wrist betweeu bis flugers. Then he
leaned over and laid his ear against
the child's heart.
"Vou think" she asked breathlessly.
"I think," he replied, looking at her
pitifully, "that your little boy"
"Doctor!"
"But we will do what wo can."
Then bo Issued some hasty directions,
and the two began to work silently
over the little creature, who lay motion
less and Impassive under their bauds.
After an hour the doctor censed.
"Mrs. Grafton, you must send for
your husband."
"Ho Is no better?" 6ho asked, a look
of agony creeping Into her great dark
eyes.
No better," he answered. "But ho
docs not suffer. Take comfort from
that."
She covered her face with her bands
fur an instant and then said In a dull,
qulot tone:

have no friend or acquaintance here.
When Mr. tirafton went away this
morning, the baby did uot seem so very
111, but he said he would ask you to
call. I bavo 'no one to send for him
now."
"Where Is he?" asked tho doctor.
"Ho hns an office on Front street

agency here."
"I will go for him," said the doctor
nnd turned away.
Late that afternoon the tiny spark of
life that flickered In the child's breast
wont out. Afterward there were weeks
of IllnesB Iu tho old stone houso, nnd
when the garden had discarded Its
blossoms and become a very bower of
green Marlon Grafton, a shadowy crea
ture, with the saddest of dark eyes,
walked down the straight path beside
her husband, and the gate of the old
garden closed upon them forever.
Years sped away. The doctor, who
had never married, still lived on the
same street, and his housekeeper was
fretting and fuming, partly because
there was a lady waltlug to see hi in
and partly nnd more particularly be
cnusc his dinner was growing crisp
nnd dry in the oven. She went to the
olllco door und peeped In at the dell
cato looking little woman who had sat
patiently waiting for the last half hour.
"Tho doctor's late," she said, "but
pVnps you don't mind wnltln. How
far did you say you'd come?"
"From Grlmby," replied the womnn.
"Did, you say Dr. Eaton was quite a
middle aged man?" she added anx
iously. "I didn't say, ma'am, but I s'poso
you'd call him so In p'lnt of age. Ah,
here ho Is now!"
From tho window the lady could see
n doctor's gig draw up at the curb nnd
a tall, dark mull with grizzled beard
descend from it.
The doctor entered and looked In
quiringly at his visitor with keen, kind
ly eyes. She rose and said a llttlo un
certainly: "I I am afraid I have made a mis
take nnd that you are not the doctor
I'm looking for."
Somehow the face and manner of the
woman brought to Dr. Eaton's mind
an elusive memory of a May morning
and a darkened room, with the scent
of npple blossoms wafted through clos
ed blinds, but the Impression was
vague and transitory and was gone be
fore he could attach any meaning to It
"You were not looklne for me, thenT'
he asked. "If you will tell me the
name of the man you want to And, pcr
baps I can help you."
"I don't know his name. I don't
remember It." she snld, with a flush
and a lltt"; deprecatory smile. "I've
been to a great many doctors in Ellis
vllle and have not found hlin. I'm
afraid he must have gone away or bo
dead."
Dr. Eaton looked puzzled nnd sat for
a moment, his eyes narrowed In
thought and his finders beating a noise
less tattoo on his knee. The woman
watched him silently, the color coming
and going In her pale face.

As he walked across to the closet

ly struggles the woman's eyes followed
him with eager lutontness. Suddenly
she got up and ran to his side.
"Ah, I know It Is you! The moment
you walked away I knew beyond a
doubt It was Just as If I were back
again in the room where my baby
died and saw you leave mo to go for
my husband! Oh, you must remem
ber me! Vou tried so hard to save my
dear little boy. I lived in nu old
stono house that stood In n big garden.
I was 111 nfter my baby died, and you
attended mo so kindly, so well! And
then wo went away and did not pay
your bill. It Is 20 years ago, and you
are changed, but I know you now!"
l)r. Eaton had turned and was look
ing thoughtfully down Into her eager
fuce. At Inst ho said slowly:
"I think I do remember you yes. I
know 1 do. Is there anything I can do
to servo you, Mrs. Grnfton?"
ies," she answered. "When wo
went away from here, we wero very
poor. Wo could not pay you nor pay
for the burial of the baby." Her eyes
dropped, and sho clasped and unclasp
ed her hands nervously. "But oh, how
I wanted to! For a time my husbnnd
was very fortuuato and made a great
deal of money. But the debts I speak
of, whilo tho thought of them drove
me almost wild, did uot Beeui to trou
ble him. When I urged their payment,
he always grew Impatient and said
they belonged to a time ho could not
bear to think of. Ho thought I was
heartless to remind blm of them. You
see," sho added hastily, "the Iobs of
our llttlo boy preyed upon bis mind
and mado him depressed nnd morbid.
So at last I censed altogether to speak
of the matter and made up my mind
that somehow some time I would
pny them myself. I never relinquished
my purpose, nnd In all tho years after,
whether we prospered or whether we
struggled for a bare existence, I nover
touched tho sum I had put by as a
nucleus, but added to It, little by lit
tle. And now 1 think I havo enough.
It hns taken a long time, nud only God
knows whut a hnunthig horror has
been to mo tho thought that my llttlo
child's funeral expenses, thnt 1 felt to
be a sacred debt, were still unpaid nnd
lay like a blemish on his innocent
memory. And now will you tell mo
how much 1 am to pay you and do
what you can to help mo find tho un
dertaker?"
The doctor sat thoughtfully for a mo
ment, then he glanced up and Hashed
a smile at his visitor a smile ot such
surpassing sweetness that sho felt her
self smiling, too, half tearfully In sym
pathy. "Twenty yenrs Is a long time to re
member a llttlo bill like mine," he
said.
"It cannot bo a llttlo bill."
"You came here from"
"Grimby," Bho replied.
"And you havo dined?"
"No-o."
"Then you must be my guest, nnd
afterward I will help you And that
man to whom you owe the other bill.
I think I remember who It was. Aro
you and Mr. Grnfton living in Grlm

'Mr. Grafton has been dead somo
years," sho said. "I am teaching school
there."
It was well on in the afternoon when
the doctor and Mrs. Grafton returned
from their Interview with the under
taker. "I cannot tell you bow much I thnnk
you for helping me," sho said. "And
now pleaso tell me how much yours
was."
"I assure you I never gave the mat
ter a thought after the first Let it
rest" he said earnestly, "and somo
time" .
"Oh, no," she Interrupted; "It must
bo today. Indeed it must. I Bliall al
ways romerabor you with tho greatest
gratitude. But don't you understand
bow I feel about this?"
'Very well, as It Is a matter of con
science with you," ho replied.
In one of the old ledgers he found the
name Grnfton and, making a quick cal
culation, announced that the Indebted
ness amounted to $15. which she hand
ed over to him, with a look thnt show
ed bow Important she deemed the matter.
"And now," she said, holding out her
little shabbily gloved band, "good by. I
will never bo able to thank you."
"I'm not your physician," said Dr.
Eaton, "but I'll take tho liberty of pre
scribing a scat In my gig for you. I
have a patient to visit near the town
road."
He spoke as one unaccustomed to
having hla directions disputed, nnd
Mrs. Grafton submitted smilingly to
his decree. So they drovo away to
gether In the lato afternoon sunshine.
As he glanced at her from time to timo
