If not registered before May 15 you cannot vote, iou can register bo fore any notary public or ins tice of the peace free of cost, or at the courthouse in the county clerk's oflico. Do not nogloct to rogister. . THE INCOME TAX. Hon. W. J, Bryan in his Baton Ronge speech defended the inoome Us and declared it to be the most just of all taxes. He advocated an amendment to the constitution specifically authorizing an inoome tax, saying at present the govern ment can draft a citiion, but can not draft the pocketbook. In the hour of peril the govern ment can take the son from the mother, the husband from the wife and the father from the child. It can stand them up before the enemy's gnns, but in the hour of danger it oannot lay its hand upon accumulated wealth and make that ' wealth bear its share of the expense of government. SOME SENATORIAL OPINIONS ABOUT SILVER. Senator Wm. E. Chandler, lie- publican, of New Harapshhe, in debate on theourreuoy bill: Why not, then, now reuew efforts in the name of the United States for bimetallidm? Why undertake by the first ten lines of this bill to strike one more blow at remone tiiation and falsl'y all the pledges wulon the itepuoucan party and its leaders have been making in all these past years. If these ten lines, without adequate qualitlmtiou, be come the law of the land, senatorH will be sufficiently reminded of their pledges before the next pres idential canvats oloses. Senator Torner, Populist, Wash ington: With the Immediate past behind them, and its lessons graven on their minds, with the prospective future before them, and its oonse quenoes so clearly pointed our, in assume that the silver question i dead to long as the masses of our people have votes to give, is to ay that they do not deserve to be free, and they ought to be slave. Occasionally a newspaper has the opportunity of correcting a mis take in the same issue in which it is made. The Salem Journui has an instance. A "waul" ad ap peared on the third pige of that paper requesting that "when hav ing your spring shirts made you go to Madam Von Tobel." Luckily the mistake was discovered in timo for the editor to apologize for the same on the first page, wbich went to press later, else a mad woman might have caused un pleasantness about that office. "Spring skirts" are the articles Madam Von Tobel deals in. The editor of the Salem Journal should have been a good football player in the days of his youth when they kicked football instead of carrying it about in arms. He is a good kicker, even with added weight of years upon him. Wit ness: I'be process of substituting foot ball for a knowledge of English literature in our o lieges goes bravely forward. Ra-ra-ra, ya ya-yal German capital is largely inter ested in the Johannesburg .gold mines and Boer threats of wrecking the mines if compelled to evacuate Johannesburg naturally cause no little uneasiness among German stockholders. The German gov ernment is much concerned and will probably ask the United States to join intercession to prevent suoh wanton destruction of immensely valuable property. The people of Lane county who vjted together for Bryan in 1896 will vote together this year for their choice of officials from presl ilnut to constable. There is a gen uine sympathetic union of the silver anti-trust forces that bodes uo good for gold standard-trust McKinleylsm. IFES ! 15 in Dmocci From many diseases.
