To the Voters of Lane County,
, Oregon, v v
In view of tbe approaching June
election this ims to be a fitting time
to call tbe attention of the citizens of
this county to Its local affairs. Never
In tbe history of the county was there
greater necessity fur tbe citizens to
unite, regardless of party, In tbe eleo
tion of men wbo will curtail expenses
and put down excessive taxation. Tbe
taxpayers were never so Illy prepared
to meet tbe demand.
Since the republican administration
of county affairs , oommenoed, four
years ago, the rate of taxation bas
grown higher each succeeding year.
The change bas been so radical, the
amounts collected and paid out so
much In excess of four years ago, as to
challenge the earnest attention of
every voter. . If you will but compare
tbe official figures you cannot escape
tbe conclusion that there have been
great extravagance and useless waste
of the public money, flfgh' taxes are
not a blessing to any people and is not
a welcome visitor to any home.
We And tbat In 1896 a tax levy of
16 mills raised a revenue suflio ent to
pay all the running expenses of the
county, and a considerable sum on the
county debt. In 1808 tbe tax levy was
20 mills, whloh raised a revenue of
$88,620, whloh waa more than twice as
large as in 1896, and yet this large sum
was not sufficient to pay the extrav
agant expenditures of the county.
In 1897 tbe levy wn 17 mills.. 0 (
In 1898 tbe levy was 20 mills.
In 1899 the levy was 23) mills.
We ask the taxpayers to consider
these figures.
With the low prices prevailing for
tbe produola of the farm, auob a high
rate of taxation presents a serious
question for each voter to mee. Not
only must we consider the low prices
for the farm produo'i, bat we must
look at tbe faot that almost all the
farm Implements and tbe necessities of
life have Increased from S5 to 103 per
cent In the Isst year.
This high rate of taxation can be
reduoed by an honest and economical
administration of tbe county affairs.
This will not be done by the party in
power, under the lash and rule of the
party ring. We believe it to be of tbe
highest Importance for tbe welfare of
tbe county, and tbe duty of each voter
of whatever former party affiliation to
place men In ofBoe wbo will reduce tbe
tax levy and run the county afiairs on
an economical basis.
A fair and equitable assessment of
all taxable property, aud the very low
est tax levy consistent with efficient

on the arrival of the 2:08 overland to
morrow afternoon, to tbe Presbyterian
church and from there to the cemetery.

Hugh Patterson is now on trial for
the crime of rape upon tbe person of
Winnie Thorn, who is under the leeal
age of consent. Patterson is but 22
years of age, a son of George Patterson,
a respected citizen of Albany, Oregon
