The other lawyers sitting around him snld they Imd never heard of it aud then waited for him to begin. Mr. lieese borrowed a fresh chow of tobac ro aud told this story: "Hundreds of experienced and inex perienced miners as well have spent a great deal of time and money looking for the lost lode of the Gore range, and they are senrching for it yet This famous mine was fouud and lost in the fall of 1890. A party of men from Iowa visited Routt county, Colo., lu the fall of 1S90 on a hunting and fishing trip. The party made Its headquarters at Steamboat Springs. In the latter part of October the party movea up auu went Into camp on Iloek creek, lu the Gore range of mountains, which runs through north ern Colorado. One of the party was a druggist, who had gone on the trip for bis health. Ho knew nothing of mining. Fie had been warned by an old miner before he left Iowa not to be fooled, as ninny a tenderfoot had been, by what Is known as 'fool's gold,' or Iron pyrites. 86 this druggist paid no attention to the rocks, but attended strictly to his hunting and Ashing. "One afternoon while bunting for deer he started a fine buck and fired at him and wounded him. The buck fell, but got up and ran before the druggist could get to him. Where ho fell was a pool of blood, which showed that be was badly wounded. The hunter trailed him by the blood spots on the dead leaves and grass for a mile and there found where the buck had lain down and then rising had gone on again. In this way the chase continued until sundown, nnd then the hunter, who was exhausted, sat down on an out cropping ledge of rocks to rest "In the enthusiasm of the chase be had not noted which way he traveled, and he realized that bo was lost in the heavily timbered mountains, with night coming on. Ho knew It would bo useless to try and And the camp that night, so he gathered a pile of dead limbs and kindled a Ore against the ledge of rocks and laid down with his feet to the blaze and prepared to sleep. While lying there he noticed the rocks sparkled In tho firelight. lie got up and examined It, supposing It was the. 'fool's gold' he had been warn ed against. But the rock looked so pretty that ho broke oft several pieces and put them In the pocket of bis hunting cont, intending to carry them back to Iowa with him as curiosities. "Tho next dny he wandered nil tho forenoon, and then found the Goro pass road over tho range and followed it to the camp. That very afternoon a regular mountain snowstorm began, and the party broke camp, returned to Steamboat Springs nnd from thero went east "The druggist, whose name I have forgotten, staid In Denver for a few days on his way to his homo In Iowa. In tho lobby of a hotel In Denver the talk drifted to mining, and the drug gist mentioned the specimens of stono ho bnd found and was taking home. An old miner never misses a chance to examine a specimen and In tills group In the hotel lobby was an old prospect or. He asked to be shown tho speci mens. The druggist went to his room, fished up the old hunting coat from the bottom of his trunk and took out tho piece of stono. Tho miner exam ined it closely and exclaimed: " 'Man, that's the richest specimen of gold bearing quartz I have ever seoul' "The druggist thought at first that he was belug Joked with, but at last tho old miner induced him to take tho specimens to Burllngame, the best as Bayer In Denver. Burllngame assayed a piece of the quartz and reported that it yielded gold at the rate of 17,000 to the ton. Tho druggist was not satis fled. He submitted another piece of the quartz to another expert assayer and got a report that it yielded gold at tho rate of $16,000 to the ton. "The druggist returned at once to Steamboat Springs, but there was snow In the mountains. He went back to Iowa and returned to the Gore range the next spring and has spent every summer since then looking for tho lost lode, and others have searched for it, too, but no trace of it has been found." An Edinburgh lawyer, a confirmed somnambulist, went through a pecul iar experience some little time ago. One evening, after dinner, ho told his wife that he had a most dllllcult law case which would occupy liltn half tho uight to study out. For hours there after he grappled with Its Intricacies, but finally desisted, saying It would be Impossible to make his brief until morning, since the case presented some dltllcultles that be bad been unable to master. Ho fell asleep from exhaustion al most as soon as he went to bed, but in a few minutes rose, and, seating him self at his desk, wrote furiously for on hour or more. Then, carefully folding and indorsing the sheets he had writ ten upon, he put them away In a pi geonhole of his desk, after which, witb- ont speaking, be returned to his bed aud slept soundly till late In the morn ing. At breakfast he expressed some un certainty ns to his "finding a solution." His wife told blm to look through bis desk, which he did, discovering the paper he had written in tho pigeon hole where he had hidden It As he read it Joy mingled with amazement showed plainly In his face, for the pa per was a clearly reasoned, correctly phrased brief on the Intricate case, with all the obscuro points smoothed out! He bad not the slightest recol lection of having written the docu ment Another extraordinary cose Is that of young man who, an hour or so be fore starting on a railway Journey, paid visit to a steamer In which bis par ents were financially Interested. In the course of the inspection be entered the little chamber In the bow of the vessel where the anchor chain Is colled and was impressed by the chamber's smallness and the cramped quarters It would afford a man sent down there to superintend the paying out of the chain. In due course the traveler went to the railway station and engaged a snug seat In the corner of a first class corri dor and sleeping carriage. He had the compartment to himself. The train had not been long on its Journey beforo the young man wns souud asleep. But he Imagined that he was awake and, moreover, that be was Imprisoned in the little anchor chain compartment of the steamer. The vessel was under way, ho thought and moving more rap- Idly than be had ever known a steamer to move before. His first idea wns to go on deck at once, but be could not get out or tho ccll-llko chamber. Uo could not stand erect even, the compartment was so little, as ho found out at the cost of an Imaginary bumped head when he at tempted to rise. Then, to his surprise, ho found that tho room bad a window, evidently a dead light, but square and unusually large. This he tried to raise, but, falling, determined to break It, thinking that he could seize tho anchor chain and by its aid reach the deck, There was only one way to smash the glass, and that was by strlklug It with bis clinched fist Ho knew that this would result in a cut band probably, but he risked it all the same, for he felt certain now that the vessel was In a storm and likely to go down any mo ment In which case bo would be drowned like a rat In a trap. Having smashed the glass, he found that tbo window was double, and be distinctly remembers breaking the out side pane, after which, with profusely bleeding bands, be carefully picked out the bits of glass remaining in tbo sashes, so that be could climb out After removing tho last remaining fragment of glass from the sash h carefully thrust bis bead and arms out and began to feel for the chain. It wag nowhere to be found. Then he pulled himself half way out of the window and reached upward. To bis great Joy, be found be coula reach over the edge of the deck; but to his dismay, it was curved and smooth, offering no projection whatever by which he might pull himself up. That being the case, aud not wishing to fall Into the water and be drowned, he painfully drew book Into the little. chamber. However, he must certainly escape or be arownea, ana arter gut ting his breath he would make another attemnt to reach the deck. As be lay panting and frightened ne accidentally reached In the direction awav from the deadlight To his sur prise, be touched a swaying winoow blind, and the next moment be found himself lying on the floor of the corn- dor of the onrushing train, with a Win dow down, through which ho had evi dently been trying t reach tho deok ol the imaginary steamer.
