A Story of a Coquette aud a Fool. . .:: There ate creatures who can bo made homeless men who save peuules to pay for rent and women who are afraid of evictions. Hut DufC Grcea kuew no such troubles anil was no more concerned about the rlso iu house rates than were tho foxes of the fields or the rats of the wharfs. Ho had peculiar habits and might have been called amphibious if It bad not been for the fact that he lived neither upou the laud not- the lake, but upon and within the breakwater. That Is to say, by day he sat upon the breakwater, one of a patieut row of fishermen, and by night ho lot him self gently down from his height by menus of a rope ladder to a sum 11 float ing platform before an opening in the piers. These piers were tlio pillars to his front door. And wlthtu the brenkwater was Duff's home. He had framed two rooms in this cave of conjoining stalagmites and stalactites, roofed them ueatly, floored them well aud bad run a stovepipe out laterally. In this retreat, visible only from the water aud run in uncon scious defiance of the city authorities, Duff kept tho necessaries of life food iu his cupboard, fuel for his stove, chairs for himself aud two friends, a clock' and a calendar. Nothing was needed except perhaps a wife. Duff noticed this hick, being an observant mnii, and when he rowed about the familiar waters In his skiff or toasted his dry bread over his fire or lay in his bed listening to the sounds of his solitude ho thought much about the matter. Sometimes It made him laugh; oftener It made him a little sad. Duff loved the singing of tlio water better than auy sound iu tho world, aud bo was not quite certain to what degree a woman's voico would add to the harmouy of lapping waters and walling winds. Duff kuew a woman. She was Mat Hendrick's daughter, and she wore a ed handkerchief about lief head when be came fishing with her father. Full of his Idea, Duff baited Agatha's hook for her a whole week of windy Juno days. At tho end of that tlmo he ask ed her to go riding In bis boat with hi in In tho moonlight, and sbo -weut. Duff listened to her talking and her laughter and liked it much. It was not so louesome as the sound of tho waves. Ho told her about his home, and slio laughed harder thau before. And ho rowed her, all In tho mnrvclous moon shine, up to tho breakwater and per suaded her to pass between the piers and to stand on the lloor of his house, aud then she laughed still more. "It is llko a story," she cried. "It cannot be truel It is not like other things I know it is not true! I am only dreaming!" "It Is true," protested Duff. "And also it Is truo that I want you to como hero and live with me. You can help mo with tho fish. Some day wo shall bavo money enough to buy a boat with sails. And I will give you a wedding present, maybe, If you will marry nie soon." Agatha laughed. "But whatever wo have now, wo must never have a new house," sho cried. "We must llvo hero where tho fishes can come to visit me. Tap, tap, I shall hear at the door, and when I open it there wbe a big fish all in his Sunday best. "Come in,' I shall say to him, and In ho will come, aud I will call vou down, nnd wo will drink ten together." And, still laughing, she look ed out of tho llttlo wiuuow at mo shimmering water and clapped her hands. Duff took It for granted that all was Bettled, and he did nothing but plan for his marriage. Ho bought somo things for tho house a crucifix and lomo new cooking tins and a red cover for tho tabic. And ho saved as much money as ho could, for ho knew that his weddlne would cost him a great deal At night ho slept only a part of tho time, and he dreamed and dreamed of Agatha, while the water without mltatcd her laugh. In Sentembor ho noticed that sho ceased to come with her father to tho brenkwater. "She wants me to go after her," he said to himself wisely. So he went, much dressed and with his curls fresh lv cut. Hut she was not at Home though it was evening, nor did she come to tho breakwater an mat weea Tho davs seemed as if they would nev er end. while he pretended to watch bis lines, yet sat with bis eyes upon tho nath that led across the railroad tracks down which Agatha always walked. But though he saw many coming that way he did not catch tho fLAVJiU OCT. Dull beadacbe, paitu In various parts of the body, sinning ai mepiv oi i" stomach, loss of appetite, ieveriBnnemi, pimples or sores, are all positive evidence of Impure blood. No matter how It became so, it must be purified In order to obtain good health. Acker's Blood Elixir has never failed to cure Hcrofulousor Hyphiiltlc poisons, or any nther blood diseases. It Is certainly a wonderful remedy and we sell every inuln on a nositlve guarantee, tor tie by W IiDeLano, (low of a red handkerchief bound about hluck braids. The lake filled the little rounis withiu the breakwater with a thousand voices that seemed to call out to Duff that ho was a fool, and he grew desperate aud one day went Id search of the girl. She was at homo Ironing some clot lies, and she looked a little frightened when she saw hint coining ut the door. "Aro you going to marry mo?" he cried. His bands were clinched ami his ryes hot. What Is the matter? Why do you speak so 7" faltered Agatha. 'You haven't been to tho breakwater for days." "There's no law to mako mo fish." "You were not at home when I camo to see you." How could I know you were com ing?" "I Ho awake most of tho night, Aga- tlin, thinking of you" More fool you, Duff. Como in and sit down. My homo Is not so strango as yours, but you are welcoiuo to it, Out of your wludows wo can soo tho water, but hero wo can only seo tho dirty street." He sank into a chair and leaned his heart against tho wall. Ho was unhap pyso unhappy that, almost without meaning It, Agatha weut over and kissed him. "Then you don't hate me?" he cried, throwing his arms about her. Tho girl grew pale. "Why should I hate you, Duff? Have I ever acted as If I hated you?" le went homo determined to bring the uumiagc to pass as soon as possi ble, aud he bought a shawl from Bohe mia beautiful with many colors, which he laid aside to give his bride. Also ho arranged with the priest, no got flow ers in pots to place in his homo in tho breakwater, nnd ho thought of how the two of tliem would slug together so loud that they would drown tho sound of the waves even in a storm. Then the days grew so few to the day he had set for his wedding that bo could count them. One cveulng she promised him that she would go again for a rldo In tlio moonlight. It was October now, but the weather was still warm, and tho moon rose tho color of blood. But, though he waited a long time at the place where she bad promised to meet lilm, she did not conic. Nor was she with tho fishers the next "day, though tho wind was Inshore and tho men weut to the market laden with their scaly burdens. The next evening bo went to her home, and her father met him at the door. "Agatha wanted nie to tell you some thing for her," said the father. "Sho Is going to marry a bricklayer who has n fine furnished tint of his own. Ho is rich. She was Just fooling when she said she would live In the breakwater. Ha, ha! That was a funuy Idea, Duff! You didn't renlly expect sho would marry you, did you? She was only. fooling. She thought It was funny to play she was going to live with the llslics. She is a good girl, is Agatba, but sho likes to have her play. You must not mind what a girl llko that does, Duff. She does nothing but laugh nil day long. But when the bricklayer talked marriage to her I told her she must stop her foolishness." 'Yes," said Duff and got up and went home. He found his boat tied where ho left it ho knew tho trick of hiding a boat and he got in It aud rowed along the inky waters to his door. Tho piers, black against the blackness, were llko the teeth of a monster, and his door seemed to be in tho cavity mndo by a lost tooth. Within It was cold, but ho lay down without covering himself be fore tho crucifix nnd let all tho voices of tho waste yell "Fool! Fool!" through his dwelling. Ho let the voices have their way because ho knew that he and Agntha would never slag them down. Agatha would novor bo thero ngain, aud as for him was It likely. that ho would sing? Exchange. She Got the Antoirrapli. At n meeting of an autograph socie ty, composed of young women, In Chi cago one particular celebrity who had remained obdurnto to all requests for his signature was almost unanimously voted to be a "mean old thing." Tho one girl who bad not concurred in the general condemnation asserted that the others did not kuow how to manage this particular lion. "I'll show you," she declared, and forthwith wrote and mailed to the celebrity a re quest composed of only two words. They were, "Autograph, please." At the next regular meeting tha girl appeared triumphantly waving a sheet of letter pnper over her head. It was the reply of the celebrity. Ho seemed reproachful. All he wroto was, "You must bo pressed for time," with his signature following. San Francisco Argonaut A Cnntlone Verdict.
