Thus he would say, "Yes, that is Bunio-Jones, but this, this hero, you know, is only Jones," or "That now is tho real lloltuau Hunt, but this hero is only Hunt," or, "Yon can hear Tennyson in that, bat Alfred wroto tho other lines." I recull two amusiu instances where Burno-Jones more or less U!icont-e,iuufiy adopted tho samo method. Ho was asked ouco if ha thought William Bel! Scott moro omiueut as a poet or as an artist. "I never thoi:;;ut very highly of Bell." he replied. Then, seeing u look of stir priso, added, with a humorous twinkle. "I liked old Boll Scott oltl Seotus, as we always called him i.inueusely, and I think William Bell Scott wroto some very lino verse, but I always thonijht it was a pity that Bell took to paintinc,!" Tho other iustanco occurred when some one remarked to liiiu that "Bar noil was only an agitater." "But Paruell, " etc., resumed the objector, to ho again corrected by tho other disputant, "Charlos Stowart Paruoll, " etc. The Oldest Patent. The question as to tho holder of tbo oldest patent in this country has brought out from tho heirs of Joseph Jencks fionte additiomd facts which tend to show that ho was tho first inventor iu this country. Patents granted from tho sovereign power of England for land, water and other privileges wore not nu. common in early colonial times. Joseph Jencks of Lynn. Mass., a number of years previous to receiving a patent for uu invention of a scytho had boon granted ono for "an application of wa ter power to mills." Biographical notes state that Mr. Jencks introduced to t:JO Massachusetts colony tho idea of patent ing inventions, and that ho might pro tect and introduce bis ideas seems to havo been a reason for coming to tho new country. Tho grass scythe patented iu 1053 was perhaps tho most valuatdo of bis inventions. The improvement over tho old English scytho, with its short, thick blade, liko a bush soythe, consisted in lengthening the blade, making it thinner nud wcldinga squnro bar at tho back and strengthening it Today this scythe, practically unchang ed, is used iu Europe and America. Tho patent was withheld from Mr. Jencks for nino years, as it was thought to bo too valuable to bo monopolized. Hart ford Couraut. A Popular DclnMlun. Tho meet ing t'iek plaeo in President Kruger'a hous.. 'JO being present, of whom tho great niajnrity, wild with indignatiou at the suihleu inroad into tiieir terri tory, wero fur shooting tho British ofli cers at once. President Kruger opposed this sum mary plan and used all his eloquence and all his intluciico on behalf of tho prisoners. For a long tiuio his efforts wero vain. It was 4 o'clock in tho morning, and the president's opponents wore still for oxocntiou. Tho livoa of tho foreigners hung by a thread. At length Geueral Joubert, ono of tho few who agreeil with tho president, had recourse to tho old tinio Boer method of convincing his hearers. He made uso of a parable. "Krieuds, " ho said, "will you not listen to my voico onco more? Suppose that close to my farm lives a had neigh bor who keeps tierce hounds in his house, worrying my sheep exceedingly and also killing some. What, then, would yon have me to do? Should I kill tho hounds to bo free of this worry? Truly my neighbor would say unto mo: 'Thou hast killed my hounds, yet their val 110 is greater than tho value of your 6hecp. Pay thou mo I' Is it not better that I should tako tho hounds nud go ing into my neighbor's house say, 'Theso are thine; now pay mo for tho harm they havo done my flock?' " Thoro was silcuco, and tho general contiuued: "Wo havo caught the pack. Is it not hotter to send them to tho British government with t'einamls for reparation, lest tho British send moro hounds to w-orry us anew?" Tho old form of argument proveil successful. Tho wisdom of moderation becamo apparent, and tho council of war accepted tho advico of their chiefs. EY ARE COMING SERVANTS' EXCUSES. One Woninn WlioWna Clever KnniiKh to t'lrcnuivent Them. Wo havo heard the story of tho Cana dian mistress who, with seven servants iu her houso, was obliged to go to the garden nud pick berries for tho table. Each of tho servants declined tho task with tho stereotyped excuse, "It ain't my place to pick berries. " Ord, iu his "History of Cleveland," relates nu an ecdoto of Margarot Wharton, who, whilo accepting her servants' excuse, yet mudo them do her will. In ono of her visits to Scarborough Mrs. Wharton, with her usual eoo-.juiy, had a family pio for dinner, which she directed tho footman to convey to tho bnkchouso. This tho man declined to do ns not belonging to his placo, or rather, as dorogatory to his couso quenco. Tho lady theu moved tho ques tion to tho coachman, but found n still stronger objection. To bhvo tho prido of both Mrs. Wharton resolved to tako tho pio to tho shop horsolf. Sho ordered ono man to huruoss nud bring out tho horses and the other to mount andrido behind, and thus the errand was done with till honor and ceremony. Then iu duo tinio tbo coachman wus ordered to put to a sec ond time and tho footman to mount be hind, nud Mrs. Wharton brought back tho pio iu tho samo dignified stato. "Now, " said tho lady to thocoaoh mau, "yon have kept your placo, which is to drive, and you yours," to tho foot man, "which is to wnit, and I mine, which is to havo my pio for dinner." Upon being told of a Chinese girl who had com plained bitterly of tho dreariness of lifo this exalted lady remarked sagely that a woman ought to tako so much prido in her borne that it oould .bo a hoaveu to her, adding, "Thoro aro always birds and flowers."
