Generous mothers and eager merchants form un almost irresistible combination against tho economical instincts of iho prospective bride or young housekeeper. Beginning with tho trousseau, a multi plicity of garments certain to outlast fash ion or grow yellow with ago is manifestly unnecessary. Tho boast that "my Knnna had two dozen of each kind" is sorry re ward for tho labor and expense involved. The revolt against these extrauignnt ideas instinctively shows itself, and iho parent or friend who quells this justiilablo upris ing establishes a precedent in the life of tho new homo which mars or ruins that rightful joy which follows in the wako of simple wants nnd conscious freedom from debt. "But just how much 1 have to last a year? We shall employ no helper, and yet will welcome an occasional guest over night. Such a question In various forms is presented in uumo homo almost dailv. Given a cottage or small apartment, self help and ti-guestroom, required to lind what amounts of table linen and bmldinn are absolutely necessary for llio lirst year In tho brido's homo. Each bed should havo for its outfit three pairs of pillowcases lor its square pillows, two pairs of sheets which nieaMiio a full yard morothan tho length of the mattress to insure undisturbed nnd protected cov-) ers, iwo wnno spreads oi a quality easily laundered and light in weight, and two pairs of large all wool blankets, of which ono pair should bo bound separately. These constitute tho solo essentials. To them may bo added a homemade quilt and comfortable. The table linen must include a best cloth for special occasions, three really good ones for geueral use and two dozen napkins that will not shed lint. Of towels there is theoretically no limit to the needed variety. Practically, however, there are only a few that aro absolutely indispensa ble. Ono dozen hemstitched buck for bedroom us;o, ono dozen checked linen for china and ono dozen crash for tlia kitchen, alt made lu yard lengths, besides three roller towels 2 yards long, will easily supply the ordinary demand under theeon dit ions imposed. Of course sickness, lav ish hospitality or even a delayed weekly washday would necessitate a larger supply in each caso. A maxim profitably observed by a successful housekeeper Is worth pass ing on tor consideration in this connection, "Kxpenso for essentials only plus remu nerative labor equals thrift." With this in mind ono can easily determine how much can or must bo added to tho supply on hand when tho thoughts of thrifty house wives turn toward Iho linen closet. Usu ally ono pair of sheets and two pairs of pil lowcases aro suilieient for the annual re plenishing. Two tablecloths, one dozen napkins and one-third tho towel list added each year will insure amplo comfort under ordinary conditions and tho added joy of conscious economy. Philadelphia Ledger. A subtlo thing is tho invisible essence. which converts a houso into a homo and tho atmosphero which ever pervades it. Thoro aro abodes that never succeed in catching it. There are many mansions, handsnmo and spacious, that aro always moro mansions nnd nothing else, not with standing tho lavish expenditure apparent in ovory room. Hut the peculiar, nesiliko look of homo cannot bo imparted by tho upholsterer, though ho ransack his ware rooms In tho endeavor, or ran tho houso decorator aid him, though he havo orders to proceed "regardless of expense." Wo hnvo all experienced sometimes in our lives the sudden chill of stitT propriety that overcomes us on entering the stately reception room of n houso of this kind, with its costly furniture, its uim.-xi ept ion oblo appointments, Hs heavy curtained windows and Its atmosphere of mustlriess. 's acquaintance, the ci khratrd on. put uppermost C'ulturu of tlio Face. Each of us can Improve her physiogno my if sho will but study to control her facial cxpisslon. Tho face is but tho mir ror for thought therefore ono Bhould guard her though to. Thus tho stopping stones to beauty tiro attained even though ono may consider oneself handicapped In the race by Imperfection of feature. It is in reality expression more than features that make or mar. One may havo perfect features, and yet if the expression bo sin ister, sensual or unloving thero Is not lu that faeo what men call beauty; rather is It found In the face which espressos puri ty, lovo and unselfishness, even though regularity and perfection of contour bo not present. Auoihi-r aid toward attaining this coveted gift is a proper controlling of the facial muscles. It is so natural to per mit tho muscles governing tho different features of tho face to assist us In express ing our different emotions 1 This is not n necessity. They do not, in reality, assist their emphasis, but, on the contrary, often make us appear grotesque and ridiculous. It is not nn aid, but a detriment, to allow the muscles of tho faco to assist In tho ex pressing of pleasure or pain, lovo or halo, surprise or mistrust. This can and should be guarded against. One who dues nut distort and wrinkle her face when In conversation or oven in repose will remain young In nppearanru much longer than one who Ih regardless uf tliis precaution. One need not ftar tho faco will become expressionless if one seeks to purify and beamily her quality of thought, for this is tho foundation of all true beauty. Women should study to havo repose of mania r. H i in most people a cultivated quality, fur tho g n ral spirit of unrest in this hour Is not conducive to its attainment. H in, however, pussiblu to acquire it, and tlarefurn all f-huuld study to do so, ami thus l.'cume an oanis in the deceit of irascible, nenous and excitable women. Thus we can all be the possessors of ral Lea my, tho inaiiifotatlun, tho ex pression of goed thoughts, evn though tl.o phj sii al ho lacking for in time tho physical will yield couiorm and express tho thought, which is caiis.ilion.
