THE ORPINGTONS. 4 lifted of PrulltHbU aud Ilaud Tho Orpington lre-duf fowls is a now ouo which Ikus rcivivt-4 much uitoutioa . from poultry journals, but is aa yet lit- i tie l.uowu auioiif farmers. They wore developed in England by a ! fancier named Cook, who 6ays ho j fcrouht them into exihtenee. for tho pur- j poso of iu fusing into farming pursuits a Hew element of profitable v-"ultry keep- in. He claims that Orpingtons aro suit- itl to almo-st all conditions under which poultry can be kept, ottering a choice of ; varieties and characteristics so as to ; mako it possiblo for all classes to keep them. Ho continues: "Tho first variety of tho Orpingtons was tho black. To mako theso I took a good Black Miuoroa, which variety aro extraordinary layers, black plumago, but small and not putting on fat readi ly, with whito tlesh and skin of lino texture, but with black legs and tre mendous activity. They aro not suitable for cold, bleak situations, as they aro not strong, hardy birds. Tho points 1 hoped to secure from this breed wero black plumage, red face and large comb aud ear lobes. I procured the finest bodied cocks of tho breed that I could find through out tho country that had red car lobes. These 'sports' bad been killed or thought little of before becauso thoy had not whito ear lobes. 'With theso Black Minorca) I mated tsomo Black Blymouth Hock pullets, which aro 'sports' from tho American Speckled Rocks, owing to tho Black Java having been used m tho making of tho Plymouth Rock breed. Plymouth Rocks aro hardy birds, winter layers of A PAIHOF 11LACK ROSK CO.MI1KI) UIII'INOTOKS. brown (or tinted) egg anil woro tlionHlit a good deal of when they woro intro duced, although thoir yellow skin aud legs uavo always been agninst tbem ns tablo fowls in this country. These vari eties when crossed produced even black pullets and good shaped birds, llio cockercls camo of a mixed straw color aud were, of course, useless for my pur poso. 'With thoso beantitiu pullets i mated a good Lnngshau, of tho old short leg ged typo, mid, as is well known, theso birds aro extraordinary winter and par ticularly Into . autumn layers of deep brown shelled eggs. They lay when eggs aro scarce, mora so than at any other time of tho year. They aro also fine bodied black birds, showing an ir idescent metallic green sheen upou their macuilicent nlnmago. bo theso birds, with their long, deep breastbouo aud whito skin aud flesh, infused many good qualities into tho breed. Tho feathers down tlio logs nail to bo disposed of, and to do this I sought out all tho Laugshaus that wero pro duced without feathers on tho legs. Theso Laugshaus laid earlier than tho feathor logged oues, and, with their breasts curved iu that peculiar way which denoted strength of constitution and thoir fiuo qualities, soon sot their stamp of roal cxccllcnco upon tho birds. So with tlio 'wastrels' (wasters) from tho good breeds I formed the Black Orpiugtons, using birds that represent ed tho threo comments viz, Jlmorcas from Europo, Laugshaus from Asia and Plymouth Rocks from America and threo varieties that woro looked npon as threo of tho best for general purposes that England possessed." Thus wero tho original Orpingtons mado. S01110 peoplo objected that tlio siuglo combed birds wero so liko Lang shans, aud Roso Combed Orpingtons wero next mado by substituting a Rose Combed Lnngshau malo. Tho Whito Orpiugtous camo noxt aud wero mado bv crossing Whito Leghorn coclts and BlacK Hamburg hens, and tho pullets or tins cross wero ovory ono whito. To mako tho Ruff Orpingtons tnrco varieties Avcro crossed. First, Golden Spangled Hamburg cocks wero mated with Dorkings. Tho reddish brown prog eny wero bv tar tuo best layers 01 hub cross, and, having selected tho best lay ers of theso, ho mated a Ruff Cochin cock with them, and about two out of every dozen camo with clean legs. Ry careful brooding ho has beeii ablo to get flvo distinct strains. Tho Orpingtons havo all tho strength and vigor of crossbreeds, and as egg oroducers. especially iu autumn and winter when eggs pay tho creamy prof its, they aro remarkable. Thoy lay liko- wise tho tinted eggs wliich conunand a premium in tho market They aro of largo sizo, aro short legged, chunky bodied, and with tlio round full breast which indicates strength and vigor, aud for an all pnrposofowl for tlio Eng lish market they seem to bo just right For tho American market they havo most serious defect in their whito flesh and Icrs. Tho blacks havo black legs, which is a disadvantage also in tlio English market. Wliulo drain Is Ilest. Jty experience clearly proves that for strongly fertilized eggs wholo grain tlio best, and if fowls havo free rango com is tho best of tho grains, caro be ing taken, of course, not to feed too gc-n cronsly to mako them overfat. I havo noticed for a long timo that hens fed al most exclusively on wholo com lay rich er eggs, with higher colored yolks, than thoso fed on a more nitrogenous ratiou fur the purpose of g'-tting tho greatest number of eggs. This led mo to think that corn ami wholo grain would givo better eggs for hatching, and upon ex p 'rimcuiing 1 found it truo. J. E. They aro of quick growth, and as CKf producers thoy aro without CHpial ninoiiH fowls to say nothing of them as feather producers. I raise Pekins exclusively. While they aro not qui to as largo us some other breeds I prefer them on account ut their domes tin hab its, whito plumao and superiority ns n ta bio fowl, both iu fineness of texturo and flavor of flesh. In tho selection of I'ekius for breed ing purposes choose those having lcugtliy bills of a deep 01-ango color, largo head aud ueck, with good length of body aud A lIOtinL PKKIN IIUAKE tho densest of plumage of a rich creamy ) whito. Short, palo yellow bills or bills 1 streaked with black, small head and neck and both short and oval, short body finishing too abruptly, and open, fluffy plnmago with wry wings or tails or wings excessively largo aro serious ob jections. Any fowl showingany of theso objectionable points would bo debarred from entering my breeding flock, aud a duck that lays green eggs is unworthy of a placo among l'ckins. "For water a running brook is tho most desirablo, but they can bo raised successfully when watered artificially. Where water is carried to them a basin can bo dug out of convenient sizo and lined with broken stouo or looso gravel pounded down firmly and comoutcd. This can bo used for a plunge- bath and washed out and renowod as often as necessary, and water for drinking pur poses can bo kopt iu a fouulaiu or slat tod trough. Wo havo tho best success with ducks during tho laying season by allowing them to roam ut will over tho farm dur ing tho day aud putting iu a lot at night, turning thorn out iu tho morning alter thev havo laid, as thoy always lay early in tho morning. Onr earliest broods aro Fot under chicken hens. Wo keep about 20 turkey liens and sell thoir oggs, and after tlio laving season wo uso all tho snaro ones as incubators to hatch ducks. Turkeys aro good, reliable 'sitters' and tho most watchful or mothers always on tlio alert for hawks. El'U'S for hatching should bo kept in a room of oven temperature and turned every oilier day until they aro set, and ducks should not bo allowed to lay in tho water, as tlio eggs may chill and fail to hatch. I prefer to set tho eggs of all water fowls on tho ground iu a nest almost bare, as I think tho moisturo taken from tho oround aids iu socuring a good hatch. Tho mother duck iu a natural way makes her nest on tho baro ground, and slio makes a daily trip to water and otten returns to tlio ucst tirip ping wet, and Hint alono should teach us that tluck eggs will bear a groat deal of moisturo. Young ducks nro ready for market by tho time they aro full feath ered, say from 7 to 10 weeks old. Last year wo wero offered 12 cents a pound at 10 weeks old by hucksters at home, and old ducks sold for b cents at tho lowest all fall and winter, and thou thero aro never any culls on account of ago. "They can bo picked overy six weeks oxcept from January on through tho early laying Boasou, giving good returns iu tho choicest of feathers. Again let mo say, if you wish something hardy and prolitablo kuep a flock of ducks. " One Variety Enoucli. From what little experionco tho writer has hail on tho practical sido nlouo, to say nothing about tho fancy part, which is a much harder task, is enough to con vince anybody that it is more than ono man can do to successfully breed and caro fur many varieties. When I first obtained tlio Brown Leg I sunn found that tho food I fed tho Light Urahmas was not tho right kind at all. .So I bad to havo two different messes in order to get tlio best results, and I find 1 don't know it all yet, after two years' experionco. Tho Leghorns want a wanner house than tlio Brah man, as a frosted comb stops all laying during winter, and they want to roost in tlio skies, while tho Brahmas would just as s '"ii havo mot her earth for a roost, but for all that I don't think the Leghorns will get to heaven first.
