Just as no man by taking thought can add an inch to his stature, so no preparation can make hair. The utmost that can be done is to pro mote conditions favorable to growth. This is done by Ayer's Hair Vigor. It re moves dandruff, cleanses the scalp, nourishes the soil in which the hair grows, and, just as a desert will blossom under rain, so bald heads grow hair, when the roots are nour ished. But the roots must be there. If you wish your hair to retain its normal color, or if you wish to restore the lost linlof gray or faded bair use Ayer's Hair Vigor. CIRCUIT COl'RT. A review of tho week just post would seem to justify one in look ing forward to nn unusually pleasant season. Not that Eugeuo as n com munity ever would or could Indulge in gaiety to any great extent. We are too staid and proper, and perhaps, too sensible to take kindly to social dis sipation in any but the mildest forms. Tho climate, conveniently held re sponsible for so many things, may have something to do with our respect for early hoars. At least wo confess to a prejudice against staying up till daybreak and the mldulght hour sel dom finds us far from our sleepy pil lows. The event of the week was, ot course, the reception given by Mr and Mrs Walter Eakin on Thursday even ing. "A succession of beautiful pic tures," Bomeono oiilled It, aud truly it was "a delight to the eyes" mid a satisfaction to tho senses. I must confess to u weakness for tho things that appeal to the sight, the light, the color, the moving brightness possess a wonderful charm In themselves aside from all the real-anil this evening gave all In full measure. Through the vista of open doorways one caught a glimpso of fairy land whom tin eo beautiful girls in artistic gowns pro- sided, reminding one of nothing so much as of tho .three graces yet In spite of all the pleasure, wo found an element of sadness ill the occasion whon wo came to say good bye to Mr aud Mrs Smith, who wcro to luave Eugene the following morning for nn Indefinite length of time. Wo had grown to look upou these people as our owu and it is hard to giva them up. lu tho Shakespeare club par ticularly, will Mrs Smith bo missed. The Shakespeare club, by the way, Is again an Intellectual activity and Miss Carson Is uguili our president. In the opinion of the club there can bo no other Hiid whllo wo nil confess to a certain selllshnisi in exacting so much from Miss Carson wo hoio to atone for It in added loyalty aud industry. Among other pleasant social fea tures of last week the patriotic Pres byterian dinner must be counted a success. The collee was delicious and the ice cream must hnvo been Uwr latively excellent since It disappeared with startling rapidity. "The last spoonful was scraped from tho can half an hour ago," was the word that greeted .ne on my arrival. Tho tables were very tastefully arranged and so well patronized that everybody who had anything to do was tired out by the lime It was over tired out but contented for the dollars had come In freely and the returns for once Justi fied the outlay of time, strength and labor. Then the.o was the McKiuley sup per equally successful, patronized and patriotic. The ladles auxiliary is evidently organized for something be sides mere amusement and tho McKln- ley club proper seems to appreciate the fact. The week chsed with a delightful evening at the University In the Gym nasium. Prof Wcatherbee appeared to be muster of ceremonies. Tho pr gram, one of the pleasant features of the evening, was partlculaily Inttr- esllng. Mrs Linn's volco rang clear and sweet In the solo with which she favored the audience, and Miss Ba right's bad "Bobby Hluifto" moved us from laughter to the vergo of teats when ha developed Into bravo It.Uiy Shafto anil when his boyish heroism brought him lo the brink of tho gravo. We waited breathless for tho end; she restored him to us a sweet, regen erated Bobby Shafto. We were relieved and grateful. ft In a recent number of the Union Signal Is a letter fiom Mrs L N Nash, of Portland. I mention It because among all the Signal's cornsS)iideiice from the dlfToreul states, Mrs Nash's letter Impressed mo as unusually bright and eiiteriuining and far from being steicolyped as Is much temperance liter turn. It would provo pleasant reading anywhere and it seemed to Illuminate the pages of the Union Signal, Tho Library Association contem plates something interesting In tho way of an evening's entertainment In tho near future. Tho Free Reading Room has a program lu course of preparation. ft Did that young minister whoso Identity is veiled, and who was men tioned in the Ol'auu hist week as hav ing had two Innocent persons arrested oususp!clon, apologize sulllcisntly and with abject humility, when ho d s covered that his suspicion was ground" less? It would bo Interesting to know, though It seems a case whore words would hardly Biiillce. If It had been a layman, now; but wo expect so much of the clergy, you know. Hri'Vllli's.
