Also THE WILLAMETTE. On Another Hanipage Heavy Loss of Saw Logs. The Willamette Is on another ram page. The stream Is running bank full and In many places has begun to creep out over the bottoms. Tho heavy downpour of Saturday night, which continued all day yestor day and a greater portion of last night williout abatement has caused tho river to rise very rapidly and tills morning it had reached the H-foot murtc at this place. Tho weather turned suddenly wanner Saturday night and has remained that way since so t hut the rains extend far up into the mountains nnd doubtless some snow is being brought out, w hich helps to swell the tlood. Shortly before noon today the stieam had reached the lo-foot mark on the guago at tho river urlilge, but was rising more slowly. H had brokou over the banks ill several places and a number ol smnll streams were pouring ncross llie county road leading north from the hridgo. But very littlu drift w ood w as com ing down the stream today. The ruin has almost censed to, fall today and it is not likely that (ho river will go much higher. The Fall Creek Improvement Com pany, of which A Wheeler is presl- d lit, and J II Hills Is manager, to ge, her with the Eugene Mill & Lum ber Company, have uffercd a heavy loss because of the unexpected rise in the river. Saw logs commei'Ced to pass down stream by this city about 5 o'clock last evening and have beeu floating by all last night and all (lay today. The logs came from Fall Cieck, fifteen miles up the Willamette from here, and no word has yet lieen received from there, so that It Is not known Just how 3erious tho loss will prove lo bo. The log were gotten out for the Eug.'iio Mill & Lumber Com pany and were yet in the bauds of the Fall Creek Improvement Company, Accordingly to an estimate, made there are about 1,400,000 feet of logs along the banks and in the streams of the Fall Creek country. Of this amount it is thought tlint 200,000 feet had already beeu floated in the Big Fall Creek Just below Ita junction with the little creek. These are be lieved lo be the logs that aro now going down the river. They wore held by n boom which has proven Insecure against the angry waters of a rapidly rising stream. All the logs tlint go below this city will be lost, but all that lodge along the bank of tho stream above here can be saved, as they can readily be floated down to the mill after the high water subsides. A largo proportion of llicni, however, have been carried by and will bo lost. Tho loss will aggregate several hundred dollars. About two-fiths of the 200,000 feet of logs in the Fay boom had been scaled and the Eugene Company may have to lose these, while the loss of tho balance will fall to tie Fall Creek company. The boom could hardly have been adequate for the purpose, though logs liavo al ways been considered safe In Fall Creek at the Fay bison after the first of March. The water has la-en coming through the slough by McVeigh's point and has shut oir travel between this city and Springfield by the river road. Travel between Ihe two places today hail to go ny way or Henderson. Annual Mkkti: so. Tonight the common council of the city nf Eugene will hold its annual meeting. Tho sequel to the peculiar case of at -attempted poisoning of the Widow Smith and her family at Coburg tins at last been found. In nil 23 visits were made to the farm by tho family persecutor and now it trans pires Unit ho Is a twelve year-old boy, Oral Poindexler, a stepson of Gianville Poiudexter, who lives on a farm ad joining the Smith farm. Sinco the recent visits were made to the Smith place by some unknown person who ecattered poison about tho premises members nf the family have been keeping a sharp lookout for the woiild-ba assasiu, and S O Gatrisoti, a neighbor, was appointed a special ollleer to keep a watch for and arrest llie guilty party. On last Friday Mrs Smith left tho homo while one of the little girls remained Micro (o keep watch. Soon after Mrs Smith left, the little girl saw tho boy, Oral Poindexler, approaching the house. He carried in his hands a small vial containing a liquid vlil"h he stin ted to pour Into the pump w hen the little girl knocked a tin pan oil of the stove making a noise that frightened him away before ho accomplished his pur pose. Mr Garrison was Immediately notified and asked lo arrest the boy, but he desired more evidence before arresting a boy so young. On Saturday morning of the little girls, Hilda Smith, aged 13 years, went lo the barn yard to pluco some eggs under a goose. While stooped over in n position to place the eggs alio was struck a blow on top of tho head from behind. Sho was ren dered senseless by tho blow ami was carried Into n chicken house about 30 feet distant, where she was left and was afterwards found hy some of thu members of tho family. Dr Mackey of Harrlsburg was sent for and render ed medical assistance to llie little girl whoso head is yet In a painful condi tion from the cflects of the blow. On tho afternoon of thu tame day Oral Poiudexter mado three visits to tho Smith house ami posted threatening notice on tho door each time. Ho was seen each visit by members of tho family who were keeping a walchont. Mr Garrison was again not I lied and this morning nrrestcd Ihe boy at tho homo of Mr Thomson, bringing him to this city this afternoon. Oral Poiudexter la a hoy small of his age. Ho wept bitterly when ques tioned In the Justice's olllce this after noon. His parents were In this city at the time of his arrest, having l?cn here for sovernl days to get medical treatment for Mis Poliidextor. It Is believed by many that ho has been prompted to commit tho act and It la Slid that family troubles have existed between tho Polmlextota and llie Smiths for some time. Tho boy was placed under (WK) bond lo await examination, as owing to tho high stage of water It will be difficult lo get wlluctars here for a few days. He lias not yet raised bonds.
