Kntered ai accond-claik matter at tho Eugene, .jrcirnn, poalodlve. THURSDAY. - - FEB. 13, 1890. A PLAIN TALK AliOUT FIS10X. Such a majority as that held by tho republicans in tho last legisla ture is dangerouB, and from its almost unlimited power to control legislation loses all sense of respon- sibility, especially when uiampu luted by a shrewd and unprin cipled politician like Jo Simon. Had there been a respectable min' ority in the legislature, (he major ity, in all likelihood, would have redoomed their pledges, and tho stato would not now be suffering from an increase of taxation. The dominant party is again seeking power and through its clubs and county organizations makes tho same pledges that wuro so shamefully ignored and broken two yoars ago. Can they be trusted again with unlimited power? The excuse has heon made that tho uiiBavory record was tho result of tho contest over the senatorship. From every indication that contest will bo fought over, perhaps more bitterly than before. The welfare of tho stato and peo' plo demands a minority ropr6sonla tion that will hold the majority to a Bonus of the responsibility resting upon it. Any sonsiblo unprcju diced person who candidly reviows tho situation cannot but admit this can only be secured by a union of minority parties. Without such union it is ns certain as the sun will rise tomorrow that tho nicuv ship will bo practically republican Tako your choice The morning after tho last legislature adjourned tho Orcgonian bad this paragraph: "Such a result! A legislature winch tho peoplo elected to do cor tain thiinB that were distinctly promised, yet nothing dnno at all, except that which is wholly ovil. There is no reduction of official ex travagance; an opportunity to which the peoplo had looked for ward lor relict was wholly wasted appropriations exceeding in prodi gality and extravagauco those of mo last legislature, under which tho peoplo groaned. ho will have tho faco to ak tho olection cf another republican legislature?" Tho recent war talk seems to have revived war memories to1 such un extent that some of the partici pants in tho last one aro fighting it all over again in tho newsparicrs, Mr. McKinley might persuade tho Canadian authorities to run now boundary lino that would tako in enough of Mnino to includo Mr. Reed's birthplace, thus making him ineligible as a presidential candidate Talk about hard times when San Francisco people paid over f 0,000 to hear a dudo pianist pound tho ivory for three nights. Men, women and children Mood in line all night to get tho first chance on tho opening of the box office. Tickets commanded from II to $5 premium. The San Francisco Chronicle) of fered a prim of a silver cup to all babies born in tho Paoifio coast states of California, Oregon and Washington on last Christmas day. Tho population of theso threo states was increased by 113 births on that day, and each baby received its cnp. The Chroniclo did not make a fair offer. It should have been made the first months of tho year to there would have been general competition. It would be a very small ho!e that Spaugh could not now crawl into. By his arbitrary act he has got the peoples party into a fine state of confudion regarding times of holding conventions. The peoples party holdB its coun ty convention in Eugene tomorrow. A committee appointed by the democratic central committee will muke overtures looking to a fusion of reform and independent forces. Wall street was eurprbeJ that any other section of the country had money to invest in governmei t bonds. There is always plenty of money in the United States to buy anything worth having, and an abundance left over to pay cash for such worthless trillcs as titles. The last authoritative declara tion of the principles of the demo cratic party was made at tho state convention held at ABtoria in April 1891. That convention passed resolutions favoring the initiative and referendum and free coinage of silver.
