SeWntiflc View, of the Queer TtalnE We Do and See While Atlcp. The causes and classification of dreams Is a subjoot that, although it has boon dis cussed from time immemorial, seems to bo as Uttlo understood, boroud a certain point, as It was agea ago. At the hypnotlo oongress held In Paris recently much " speni m oonstderlng this ques tion, and though some Interesting theories wore brought forth the savums were but utuowiserwhon the discussion onded than wuou it oegan. A compatriot of Ibsou, Dr. Mourley Void, professor in the Unlvorsity of Chris I Inn la, Rave the result of "jumerous ojperi ments made upon himself and others who had lent thoniselves to tho cause of science m trying to ascertain the dividing Hue be tween the rolo played In dreams bv tho cutaneous and muscular senses and be tween mo true Images of the day and tho phantoms of the night. You rarely dream, this savant says, that you are lying down, but gonorally thut you are standing or sitting in a way corre sponding to tho position of tho member whloh makes its Impression upon tho mind. For example, if one dreams that ho Is standing on tiptoe, It will be found that his toes are pressing hard against the footboard of tho bed. Dreams of walking, running, dancing and tho liko are always produced by the position of the feet. Another of this dootor's thoorles Is thnt when wo dream our minds, to a certain extent, boeome as they wore whon wo w ero omidren. In support of this he says that wnen a dreamer, with half awnkoned sense, soos his hand before him ho Instinc tively begins to oount tho flugors. This is because tho dormant souses reduce tho sloepor's mind to a ohildlsh state of feoblo- ness, and It is In iufnnoy that our first les sons lit computation begin upon our lin gers. The visual Impressions of the day form another olass of dreams. Dr. Mourlov Void is of tho opinion that happy days aro followed by pleasant dreams, and vlco versa. Evory one knows, however, thnt tills Is not always tho case. At the oouoluslon of the learnod Norwe gian's addross one of the oldost of his lis teners one of tho most oelobrated phy sicians in Paris remarked to a oolloague that if ono has hnd bad dreams It Is be cause of indigestion, or too much olothos on the bod, or too littlo air In tho room, or because bis wife snores, or because bo is lying in an unoomfortablo position, and that with proper precautions there should be only pleasant dreams or nono at all. Now York World. H Bought Hii Own SUtne. There was irrief in a South Side house hold one day whon a careless servant al lowed a valuable piece of statuary to fall and break In a dozen pioces. Tho girl had a good cry and offered to pay for the mar ble, but that was out of tho question. Tho manservant, who was also coachman and landscape gnrdonor, was instructed to take tbo fragments of the art treasure and dis pose of them. It happened that he knew a thing or two. Instead of dumping the pieces Into an ash barrel ho took them to a repair shop, where they wore carefully glued togother by an expert workman, When tho job was completed, tho servant took the marble to a dealer in antiquities and objects of art, explained how he came into possession of it and received an equiv alent of two weeks' wages above tho ooBt of repairs. Some wooks later the original owner came upon tho marble In the show win dow. He could hardiy bellevo his eonses, as ho had bought his nmrblo as an origi nal, and horo was anothor original. Ho went into tho shop and prlcod the figure. "That's very oheap," ho remarked. "I must explain to you," said tho dealor, "that it has been broken and ropaircd." Ho pointed out tho faint linos showing where tho pieces had been joined and then the former owner recognized his property. Ho couldn't olalm it, as he had onue or dered it thrown away. Neither could ho accuso tho servant of theft. Ho bought the marble and took It homo with him, and tho manservant nearly fainted when he saw it in Its old place on tho mantel. Chicago Record. A Baron Newsboy. Ono of the most interesting oharaoters In a way lp Chicago is said to bo a "news boy" who bears the title of baron and one of the proudest names In northern Ger many. He Is Baron Richard von Sydow. Every day Von Sydow goes his rounds with a bundle of papers so big that ho can hardly carry it, for he is 70 yonrs old now and has lost tho vim that distinguished him as a young lieutenant years ngo in the Bluoher hussars in his natlvo land. He is the son of General William von Sydow, who fought at tho battle of Waterloo. He is also connected by marrlago with tho family of tho Princess Bismarck. Tho bar on, when a young man, was a guest at tho marrlago of tho ex-ohanoellor and loves to tell what a flno, stalwart, popular follow Herr von Blsmarok was in those days. Von Sydow, it Is said, tiring of the llfo at home on a small plttanco, came to this country in 1801 and served as a captain In the famous Twelfth Illinois cavalry. He took up servico again in Prussia, but soon came back to America, where, however, ho has had difficulty In getting along. New York Trlbuno. A war That Snobs Have. New York Tribun. TREACHEROUS REDSKINS. Experience Shows It Is Not Safe to Trust the Indians. Lieutenant Thomas Cruse was in com ma nd of a company of Indlau scouts In tho cummer of 1SS0 in Arizona. They were mte mountain Aiwtehm ami had been un der him for over a year. Throughout this porlod, which was a stormy ono for the Arizona troops, these Indians had boon good soldiers ami were faithful to tho serv ice in shooting down their own race and showing absoiuto loyalty to Uncle Sam. Lieutenant Cruse was often compliment ed on the spirit which his Indians exhibit ed, when those uudor other officers woro ooustantly proving disloyal. It Isn't be traying a conmience to say that Cruse was a littlo vain over his rmlskln cavalry mon, and he didn't hesitate to glvo his brother officers a "tip" occasionally as to how to manage them. "Just take them into your confidence, so to speak," Cruse would say, "and show them that youhnvo faith in their loyalty." Tho lieutenant was thoroughly honest in giving this advico. For more than a year ho has been in command of these Apachos. Ho fought side by sido with them, shared their dan gers, ato with them and slopt with them, and they had alwnys been as truo as steel. Not long after Cruso had boon gtvtng pointers about how to manage tho Apa ohes tho Messiah craze took hold of tho In dians of Arizona and the old tltno loyalty gave way to Indian superstitions. Troop A stood by Cruse well enough, but ho was too familiar with the Indian character to mistako tho sullen look that showed Itself In tho faces of tho redskins. He asked that they bo discharged and Mojavo In dians put in their plaocs. This was not dono, and on Aug. 80, 1881, without a word Troop A broko away from tho Unit ed States service and joined tho host lies at Clbtcu creek. Tho battle which followed this revolt Is a familiar story In army circles. Two or throe days after tho unceremonious depar ture of Troop A, 600 Indians swept down on two troops of Undo Sam's cavalry, and It looked for awhile as though there would bo a repetition of tho Custer tragedy, but by daring heroism tho bravo cavalrymen cut thotr way through tho circling band of redskins and mado their escape with only ton men killed, though at least a score wero badly wounded. "Novor trust a redskin as far as you can throw a bull by the tall," Is tho way tho lleulonaut put it a few days latorwhen wo wero discussing tho tragedy of his fonnor trusted comrades. Washington Post. Farts Cafe Walter's Tale of Wroug. Tho Paris cafo waiter has boon throwing himself upon what, owing to his failure to approofuto whoro the sympathy oomes In, ho somowhat fondly hopes may provo a sympathetic public, with his taloof wrong. Ho Is, ho says, neither paid nor fed nor slaked by his employ or. So far from that, ho pays his omployer, and Is fain to feed and slake himself Into tho bargain. Moro ovor, ho poys his employer overy morning, In advance, 5 per cent upon the salo prlco of tho consommatlnus ho has got to work off in tho course of the day. To recoup himself ho must look to his tips, and till ho has been tipped to the amount of 6 shil lings, his profits do not begin to run. When they do begin, however, thoy must needs run to something considerable, soo lug that thoro is a brisk competition for evory vacancy in tho ranks of his profession. It follows, therefore, that It Is really tho public who pays all concerned, and the public Is thus likely to keep Its sympathy for Itself. Of courso, If it withheld Its tips also, tho woltor would havo to bo paid and provisioned by tho cafo proprietor. But then, tho publlo shrewdly surmises, tho prices of its consummations would be put up, and, though tipping might oomo into tho fashion again, tho prlco would never oomo down. It naturally prefers the Indirect contribution as It Is. Pall Mull Gazotto. The Terrible Cockatrice. The explanation of tho origin of that ro markablo organism, tho cockatrice, leaves nothing to bo desired as regards accuracy of detail. Wo aro told that "when the cock Is past 7 years old an egg grows within him, whoroat ho greatly wonders." Wo can woll imagine the dismay of any woll conducted masculine bird of that ago on finding himself In such a compromising predicament, but howdid ho communicate his feelings to tho historian F That the enibryonlo cockatrice had some mysterious power of self advertisement is evident, for we hoar further that "a toad privily watches him and oxamlnes tho nest every day to soo if tho egg bo yot laid. When tho toad finds tho egg, no rejoices mucn, ana at length hatches It, bringing forth an animal with tho head, neck and breast of a cook, and from thence downward the body of a serpent." Westminster Heviow. Queer Case. "Tho durndest caso of snako bite I ever knowod of, "said the man with tho ginger beard, "was a feller out In Iowoy that got bit by ono of them prairie rattlers. Well, you know that ef a man drinks enough whisky he thinks he sees snakes, but this here feller, bein bit by a snake, Imagines he was full of whUiky and bllln drunk.
