Hatch, who has grown flax quite successfully, told a Statesman reporter that the gen tleinnn mentioned above would not en ter a contraot with a farmer unless tho latter would agree to sow forty aores at the very least. Washington's Birthday Will Be Ob served lu an Appropriate Manner. Tomorrow the teachers and pupils of the publie schools of Eugene will ob serve the anniversary of the birth of the Father of our Country. The ex ercises will be held in all the rooms of the schools, or perhaps two rooms la the same school will consolidate for holding tblr exercises. Were there an auditorium in the city large enough for the entire school to bold their ex ercises together, it is likely this would be done. The program will x mmence in the various rooms about 9:30 in the morning and will continue until about 11 o'clock. The children will be permitted to take the rest of the day for a vacation. The rooms have all been tastefully decorated with appropriate pictures and drawings and other ornamental haudlwork of the students. All friends and patrons of the school are given a cordial Invitation to attend the exeroUes, and can thereby see by the workings of the school the ad vancement that has been made by the pupils. Lower. Hop Yard to be Wired. The Campbell-Walker hop yard at Jud- klns' point is helng put in condition, ex-County Clerk Walker . being in charge. Posts will be used, Insteud of poles, placed every fifth hill, with a wire strung on top. These will remain permanently and dispense with Retting poles and trimming every season. This is tb first hop yard of any con siderable size in Lane county to adopt this system, although it Is lu extensive use lower down the valley. . A few acres of the Davis hop yard on the McKenzle was wired last season with the best results. The first cost is but little more than by the old method. Steamer Eugene. This beat will arrive in Hurrlsburg tomorrow after noon, The boat will again leave Port land for Harrlsburg Monday, and will guarantee her arrival at the hitter place the day following. If the river should rise sufficiently she will come to this city. Griffin Hardware Co. will ship quite au amount of heavy goods on this trip of the boat. The district which Mr. C'oolldge asks to represent consists of the counties of Lane, Linn, Polk, Benton, Marlon and Lincoln. Under the next law there are bIx members of the State Board of Horticulture. R. D. Allen, of Silverton, the present member, has resigned, leaving a vacancy. The appointment of Mr. Coolldge would be a splendid one. He is an ac tive and practical worker in tne neiu of horticulture, and the enthusiasm which he possesses on all subjects con nected with the care aud cultivation at fruits and other branches of horti culture would render him a valuable member. The compensation received hv the members of the board is nom inal, hardly more than necessary to defray traveling and other expenses. At the Theater. Mahara's mammoth minstrels per formed to a fair house lost night. While the regulation minstrels differ very little in regard to their programs, yet there Is usually a noticeable differ ence in the excellence of the perform ers. Lost night the performance was uniformly good and the singing of the male quartette, the contortionist and the trombone soloist all deserve favorable mention for their excellent work.
