Ed Guard: To put an end to so
much uewspapor notoriety, which is
not particularly pleasing to me, I will
state that I am not an applicant for
secretary of the State Board of Horti
culture, but have filed an appli
cation for appointment as a
member of said board. If success
ful I will still be permitted to continue
at my home and work where It is most
pleasing to me among my fruits
and flowers. D. W. CoOLlDOE.
The district which Mr. C'oolldge asks
to represent consists of the counties of
Lane, Linn, Polk, Benton, Marlon
and Lincoln. Under the next law
there are bIx members of the State
Board of Horticulture. R. D. Allen,
of Silverton, the present member, has
resigned, leaving a vacancy.
The appointment of Mr. Coolldge
would be a splendid one. He is an ac
tive and practical worker in tne neiu
of horticulture, and the enthusiasm
which he possesses on all subjects con
nected with the care aud cultivation
at fruits and other branches of horti
culture would render him a valuable
member. The compensation received
hv the members of the board is nom
inal, hardly more than necessary to
defray traveling and other expenses.

uniformly good and the singing of
the male quartette, the contortionist
and the trombone soloist all deserve
favorable mention for their excellent
work. The company left north on last
night's overland.
