POSTOFFICE REPORT. Uuslness Done During Quarter Eud- tug December 111, 181)4. The last quarter, from Ootober 1 to Deo. 31, inclusive, has been one of prosperity for the Eugene postoffloe, the receipts of sales aud money orders exceeding by a considerable amount, those of any other equal period of time in the history cf the ofllce. At the so licitation of a Guard reporter, tho ef ficient postmaster, Thos. J. Craig, kindly furnished the following statis tics whloh makes a favorable showing for tho office: Amount of postaite stamps, postage due stamps, news paper aud periodical stamps, stamped envelopes, newspa per wrappers, special deliv ery Btamps and postal cards Bold during the quarter $1,618 70 Box rents for quarter 260 00 Total receipts $1,778 70 MONEY ORDER DEPARTMENT. The Lakeview Examiner says there were at least three heroes that went to their death to save the lives of others in the Silver Lake hall fire that killed 40 people: - " Clay Martin came out with T. J. La- brio's child his in arms, but seeing that bis wife waa not there, ho started baok. Several pcrsoiiB tried to keep him out, but he pushed in, with the child still in his arms, saying, "I am going to save 'Becky'," his wife. He and the child were not seen agalu. Wood Hurst, familiarly known as "Senator" Hurst, wbo had recently been married, oould not find Bis wife outside, and, notwithstanding the many entreaties to stay out, he went to save her. lie was lost. Frank Ross did the same. His mother was inside and he wanted to save her. Without a doubt each one of these men blocked the narrow passage and prevented others from getting out. Mrs. Dr. Owsley and her sister, Mrs. Snelline. when last seen were kneeling side by side, praying fervently, as if they knew it was their last moment on earth. Others were seen to be run nine about, aimlessly dazed, and might have escaped had. they not lost their presence oi mina. Was OVEB-cURtous. Sunday's Portland Sun: Duncan McDonald, formerly employed on the steamer Eu gene, who is serving a sentence of 100 days for a murderous assault on a wo man whom he professed to love, was yesterday arraigned before Justice Geia- ler on the oharge of defacing a build ing. It is alleged that while in Jail and acting as a trusty, he broke the lock of the door leading into the female cells at the county Jail, with the Inten tion of making an entrance. McDon ald pleaded not guilty and asked that his examination be contineed until Monday, which was granted. To Rosebubo. B. T. Bryan and E. L. Fisher, both employes of the Palace laundry, will soon start In the same business for themselves at Roseburg. They are bright, honest apd energetio young business men and understand their business thoroughly, and we can assure the people of Roseburg that they will have a laundry conducted on a business-like basis and one from which none but the best work will be turned out Mr. Bryan Is out there now and Mr. Fisher will leave In about three weeks. , Discharged. John and George Allen appeared before Justice Wheeler this morning for trial, but after the evidence was all in they were dis charged from custody. The affair ap pears to have been a general wrangle over the domestic infelicities of Bos quet and his wife and. the charge against the Aliens In the main seems to have been pure fabrication. WE STILL HOLD THE MEDAL. Laue County Is in no Danger of Losing Her (Juu-accideut Medal. Gun, revolver and didn't-know-lt-was-loaded accidents have been scarce for several months, aud other counties have been slipping up on Lane county with the intention of taking away her medal as the banner gun-accident county in the state. But we have tak en a frail start again. This morning about 7:30 o'clock, while Ed Poill a student of the Uni versity of Oregon, was coming over from his home at Springfield, he met with a painful acoldent, the same hap pening when he was near Edwin Jud kin's residonoe, about one mile east of town. In his right coat pocket was a re volver, aud as he was study lug on the way down, his hand unconsciously found Its way into the pocket where the revolver was. The "guu" was a double-action one, and, In an evil moment he pulled the trigger. Burled in thought on his lessons, this was an easy thiug for him to do wlthoutbelng aware of his actions. Very few per sons there are who, while in a deep study, will not toy with anything their hands come In contact with. His clothing was set on fire by the dis charge alBO. Ho found his way to Mr. Judkins' house and his burning clothing waa extinguished and Dr. Palue was sent for to attend the injured boy. On ar riving tho doctor found that the ball had entered the right leg Just below tho groin and ranged downward toward the knee, where it lodged about 10 inches from where it entered. The ball was removed and tho wound dressed carefully. It was a flesh wound tho ball not coming In contact with the bone on its course down. With good care, this victim of his thoughts and a loaded revolver, will be, in a couple of weeks, limping along the road to recovery at a very fair gait. Wo venture to assort he will be more careful of what he "monkeys" with in the future. D. P.'Ttiompaoa Mar Rtt. : Salem, Jan. 20. Tho train which arrlvod from Portland tonight carried as passengers H.
