The arrival of Jamestown day finds the exposition practically complete with the exception of some of the state buildings and concessions. The Warpath is yet in an incomplete state, several of the concessionaires having commenced construction work since the exposition opened. Hutchings, president of the Great American Mining Company, ar rived here this morning from Port land for the purpose of overseeing the beginning of the work of developing the coal properties which the com pany has secured south of Eugene, in the vicinity of Creswell, as previ ously mentioned by the Guard. A gang of Japanese laborers arriv ed up from Portland this afternoon and were at once taken to the mines to open up the property. Mr. Hutch ings while In the city this morning purchased a large order of picks and shovels, wheelbarrows and other Im plements that are used In coal mining and they were started for the scene of operations during the day. The great American Company is fi nanced by Chinese capitalists and It is said they have no stock for sale. The backers of the enterprise have plenty of money and are determined to find out whether or not coal in paying quantities exists In this lo cality. The experts who have ex amined the deposits say they are of the opinion that a very large vein can be fonnd if the proper depth la reached and the company will spare no expense to reach it. If a good supply of marketable coal is found there It will mean much to Eugene and the upper Willamette valley. This company asks no help from the people and is operating on an Independent basis it should be given every encouragement by the citizens of Eugene. E. D 31 E js L Ninth Phone Main 60 GET THE BEST J.
