Ackerman, supcrluwtul fnt of public itutruction, in u interview recently ut!isUeil i the Orfgonun tul lo reprint ed in this isue of ths Knter .ne, favors the donation to tU slate of Oregon, to become an irro.liu-il'le school fund, the i .n 1 of the Oregon A California land gntnt, if the name thall he recovered by the United States government, fcuch disposition of these lands U practicable if proper restrictions can be uiude t prevent the confiscation of the same into the baud of the land sharks and tho framing of a law looking to this end is not tho safest in the bauds of the congressional bodies ut Wash ington. At least the laws here tofore have not been etl'ecuvo for the interests of the people at lurge. Ttie homestead laws as they are upplied at this time are tho safest guarantee that these lands will be properly distribut ed to honest homeseekers, not lo say that this paper is not in IV vor of Mr. Ackeriuun'e plan. His plan is favored most hearti ly with a guaruutee that the proper restrictions will be pro vided so that the laud will not be grabbed up, by speculators. These lands are most valuable and the government should not let loose of them until laws are suggested for operation with no loop hole for confiscation. The plan of Mr. Ackertuau is a la vorable one and deserves con sideration. It Reached tue Spot. Mr E. A lodge of Bebekahs was organized at Monmoiith last Thursday by Mrs. Corrie Hubbard, stae organizer for that order. The new lodge starts out with splendid prospects owing to the large membership arid the excep tionally good corps of officers at the head. In the evening a large dekga tion of Independence Rebekahs vis ited Monmouth and assisted in the initiation ;of twenty-seven candidates. After tiie initiation, which was gone through by eleven o'clock, in Mrs. Hubbard's usual prompt manner, there was a sumptuous banquet spread in the lodge room. A eood game of base ball was play ed in Independence Sunday between the team of this city and Monmouth. After the first two innings the game took on all the semblance of pro fessional playing. From the second inning neither side was able to score. The game resulted in favor of Mon mouth, the score standing nine to three. Batteries for Independence were Clay Freeman of Corvallis and James Collins. For Monmouth Force and Craven. With the splendid showing made in the game Sunday it is evident that Independence can have one of the best teams in the country. The boys need suits and paraphernalia. These details should be looked after that our boys can make a creditable appearance in game. Chronic Conntipatlon Cured.
