Considerable npitntion i going the rounds at ttiis time and will be continued until after the June election, reardin the University appropriation of $12.1,000. Many arguments nre being advanced by the friends of the University for the approp riation, but they a U sight of the fact the people who work hardest to pay the taxes which goto make up this appropria- Hon get no oeneu. ..u,u University. W e have no oi- jeetion to ine sm-jib " reasonable amount to the cause of higher education, as some are pleased to call a university rnurse. but we Io not laTor tax in" the common people to pay for luxuries for the Tavored tew Let us make an example of the wav this matter looks to a pnu tical man. The State Norm si at Monmouth was given an Ap propriation ot $3o,'00 with which to turn ut prac many COO teachers, who are not only henf-fit to the state at 1 arg?. but absolute necessities; on the other band the taxpayers c.r asked to dig up $125,000 to turn out about the same number of University products that are so many luxuries, There is no one who. wants a university course, but is able to pay for it provided he has been helped to ret a normal or agricultural The trouble! with the state of Oregon is that the people are supporting too many schools that give prac ticaliy the same 'course , of in struction, thus paying twice for the same service. The Norma! school is an absolute necessity jai'id should be liberally sup ported, but if there is to be an .abnormal amount of expendi ture for educational purposes, let it be given for the education of the common peoples children so that every one can have at least an eighth grade education, then give the people in every county a high school and there he a ereat change, from what if was when the editor of this paper was a boy. As an evidence of the comparative benefit the people get from the money invested in. the Univer sity and that invested m the Normal we cite the fact that m the Portland public schools there are 37 teachers employed who are graduates of Monmouth and only five from the Umver fiity of Oregon. The University a8ks for $125,000, but Monmouth . tould be thankful for 125,000. Onefifth as much money as the former asks for and nearly eight times the benefit. Comparisons are said to be odious, but so is graft and it looks to us very much like graft of no smaHpro portions to have to pay $125,000 for something that the pe . pie can get along without.
