Statement No. 1 jriicij'li lias won cut in Malio, anJ tanir re vision in Iowa. Though fought by the machine in Mali", W. 12. Horuh, the I-ri!I:ai)t young law erof Hoisif, who litnl the com;- to statu. uj for the j-t'onle in their dfiiminl for a change in the method of electing United States senators, won out and is the nominee of the republicans of Idaho, as Jonathan Bourne is of the republicans of Oregon. The only difference in the situa ation as to Mr. Bourne and Mr. Borah, is that Bourne was nom inated by the people under Ore gon's Direct l'rimary law and Borah was nominated under Ida ho's convention system. Gov ernor Cummins, honest and out spoken in his convictions for tariff' revision, with the people at his back, has downed the Iowa machine, which is another significant omen. The repub lican party, until recently top heavy with safe majorities and machine-ridden to the disgust of the rank and file, is showing signs of reform within that au gurs well for the safety of the imrti- And irosreritv of the i -j i j -country. The party has never had such a purging a9 it is re ceiving under Roosevelt, nor did it ever need it worse. The peo ple have re-asserted themselves and made possible the Cum mins, LaFollettes and Roose velts. Tho leadership of the re publican party is coming back to the people, and therein lies the party's safety. The people s demand for a change in the election of members of the cor poration-ridden senate, is receiv ing respectful hearing at last and Oregon, for the west, is to be congratulated on leading the way. Idaho, cut off from the original Oregon territory, fol lows suit. Iowa, of the middle west, is next heard from through Governor Cummins on tariff re vision, and though the great pro tected concerns are yet to be reckoned with, under the cour ageous leadership of a Cummins the tariff must be re-adjusted. A large volume of smoke rising from the mountains beyond the Bryan mill southwest of Falls City, has been visible the past five or six days, giving the appearance from here of an incipient forest tire. According to reports from Frank Butler and Commissioner Teal from the Falls City district, there is no great danger. The fire is supposed to have started from lightning Sat urday but men in the logging caa:ps have prevented the spread of the fire to dangerous proportions. MOTOR LINE TIME TABLE. As hop harvest time advances it becomes known England cannot draw on Germany as usual. Furthermore, it is becoming apparent the Oregon crop will not be as heavy as has been predicted. The market ac cordingly soars. The 15 cent mark has been passed, and but few are letting go any longer. E. M. Young purchased 100 bales from Ralph Williams at 15 Wednesday. Sixteen and I65 has been offered without takers, Eighteen is being offered on short time options and one local dealer has been trying to secure an option at 20 cents. What's the etufi we eat today?
