Mr.Scofield and A.Noltner atten ded the meeting at the board of re gents at the Normal last week. An excursion train to Newport passed through town early Sunday morning. Oregon, were guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Dickinson the past week. J. Robinson and wife, of Port land, visited at tne home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Rob inson, in this city, last week. They returned home Sunday. W. H. Powell and wife of St. Hel ens, passed through town from New port Tuesday. At cne time Mr. Powell was principal of the school here, but of recent years he has practiced law at St. Helens. Mrs. Mellen, of Salem, a sister of Mrs. J. E. Hubbard, visited in town this week. This is the first time in four years she hail been in Indepen dence, as she is a total inval id. She is visiting at the Irelands', near Monmouth. Otis Duree, who has been spend ng several weeks at the home of H. H. Wagoner, left Monday for Portland and the Sound. After a hort stay there he will return to Iowa, by way of Sacramento, Salt Lake City and Denver. A very enjoyable and harmonious party, consisting of the immediate members of the family and a few intimate friends, were entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Goff last Saturday evening, 'games music, etc. helped the evening to pass merrily away. Late in the ev ening a dainty repast was served, after which the guests departed, taking with them many pleasant memories ol a very pleasant evening. Mrs. R. S. Cla'k, of Salem, has len spending several days with friends here. She says they like Salem very much, and that Mr. Clark, who has purchased an in terest in a steam woodsaw, is doing well. W, A. Mr. Luzader is thinking some of coming to some point in tbe west and locating. Ross Nelson, Tom Fitchard, Q-orge Graves, Perls Locke, Hugh Shelley and "Mike" Walker left Monday for an outing at Newport. They have a camp of their own, "Camp Pendix in Happy Hol low." They are a merry gang, and it is guaranteed that all the fun coming their way will not be per mitted to pass by unmolested. There will be no preaching at the M. E. church next Sunday. Rut on 8unday, the 23d, the pastor will conduct divine services in the morning at 11.00 o'clock. Subject: "A Candid Master." In the even ing will be the fourth quarterly meeting pleaching service.
