If rabbits nre bred for food only, the Bclectlon of stock is of less Importance than when they are bred for show pur noses. All thnt Is reuulred Is a slzublt nnlrnnl of cood. hnrdv slock. However, the nolnts for which the fancier breeds tho HelRlnn hnre include also those most desirable In a food nnlrnnl, so thnt if one can find stock with these characters well marked, nnd nt the ennm time constitutionally sound, he should by nil menus obtain it. I'urO' bred stock is more profitable, too, be rnuso It mny be sold for breeding pur poses as well as for the table. General Standards. Tteletnn hnre fanciers of n few yenrs ego differed somewhat In opinion as to tho proper stnndnrd of color for tins animal. Some aimed at the color of tho wild English hnre a sandy light brown. Most Amerlcnn breeders seem in hnvo nreferred a deeper reddish tirnn-n Tn nil other rcsiiccts the stand outs were the snnie. The cnier re quisite concerning color is thnt It slinii ,n na nenrlv uniform as possible throughout tho upper surface of the nnimni nml thnt the fur snail nave a rich luster. The belly nnd the lower surface of tnll nnd hind feet should be wiutisn, out -hito The neck nnd breast ho snmewhnt Iliditor in shade thnn the back, but not in mnrKca con nui'uiu trast with It, nor should tne cnangu m ehndo be abrupt. Ears. The ears of the mature tsei Him should be about 5 to 56 Inches in i ,i. .,,,.ir.r with the size of the nnlrnnl. They should be well shaped, strong nt tho base, nnd almost trnns- n tim middle. They must not be pendulous, but should, when the ... II 1 tinll-n-r Cirri nnlnial is quiet, no innmuu u,.v..v,..v., resting straight over the shoulders. Bucks nnd the younger fe males should never have the appendage known ns "dewlnp." This some mcs develops in the older ones, but is re garded as a blemish in animals Intend ed for show purposes. The ba should be only slightly arched, and the forelegs and feet should be perfectly straight nnd free from white. Age of Breedlno Stock.-The begin ner should always - select mature ani mal, about a year old for breeding stock These may bo known by the St alert look, the and the small claws, a most hldde n in the fur. .Coarse, long claws are a sure indication of age. Listless-looking, rough-couted, or pot-bellied animals (except pregnant does) should be re Jocted, especially those having the wiiiies of the eyes stained with vel low. A hutch rabbit In good health is gentle, neither savage nor overtlmld, and does not screurn when lifted by the enrn. The Sexes. The does selected for breeding mny be of the same strain ntid even of the same litter, but the buck should be of different stock, and when poHHlble obtained from another breeder. Hardy young animals with the best characteristics of tho breed may bo bought at from $1 to $2 each, Often they may be had of nearby breeders, thus saving the expense of carriage on long Journeys by express. Hutches and Pens. The Belgian bnre does not do well when kept wild in open warrens. The common English rabbit is better for this purpose. A good many IJulgluns hnvo been turned out in various parts of tho United States, and In the vlcln Ity of tho city of New York nnd on tho western coast this hns resulted in some complaints of damage to crops, Am a rule, however, and fortunately for tho fanners, these animals, when obliged to Kblft for themselves, fall un easy' prey to their enemies and dlsap penr within a few months. Belgian hares mny be managed fuic cos.sfuily in two wnys: (1) Entirely In hutches, or (2) in outdoor fenced runs, or courts, with hutches for does when having young, and sleeping hutches for other stock. The hutch system with various modifications Is the more common and is the only method adopted by rabbit fanciers who raise for show. The use of small runs or rabbit courts to give the animals healthful exercise In fine weather Is of Hdvantnge. The Rabbitry. The rabbitry mny occupy part or all of n barn or shed, or be built in a she! tered space in the angle between buildings or walls. The Indoor rab Id try has decided advantages. The place should be well ventilated, but not subject to drafts of cold or dnmp n I r. These may be prevented by ventl lators In the roof, or by a system of elbowed pipes passing through the sides of the building and renchlng a height of two or three feet above the openings. Hutches. Hutches for the Belgian hare should be somewhat larger than those intend ed for smaller breeds. They should be built of good lumber, have tight floors, nnd have at lenst 12 square feet of floor space nnd n height of two feet, If there is plenty of room in the rab Idtry it is best to have the hutches sep arate; but they are usually set In tiers or stacks, two or three In height. Each hutch In the rank Is complete In itself, so thnt Its position may be shifted at any time. A convenient Indoor hutch is one 6 by 2 by 2 feet, with a movable parti' Hon dividing off n third of the space at one cud for a nest nnd sleeping chamber. The pnrtltlon has a smooth hole to permit passage of the animals from one part to the other. The front of the hutch has tw;o doors, one of wire netting, the other of wood. The wood' en door opens to the sleeping chan tier and should close tightly. It is best Movable Outdoor Hutch. to use metal hinges for the doors. The partition mny slide In a groove be tween the doors or may be nut in and taken out through one of the door openings. Outdoor hutches should linvo sloping roofs nnd overhanging eaves to protect them from rnln. The screened door should have n sliding cover of wood or ho fitted with a removable cloth cover Small holes bored near the ton of the hutch will afford all necessary ventila tion. Movable hutches have some advan tages. They may be carried outdoors In fine weather and taken back under shelter nt night or during storms. T inn. nnrrnm lrvnta nroleettni? nt both mi. . v . i- -' " i - r ends of the hutch are nil that are needed to" convert the ordinary hutch into a movable one. Courts. A rabbit court may be paved or floored, or It may be n grass court sur rounded by a rabbit-proof fence. Sleep ing hutches Inside the court may be omnii hnves of nnv sort If they are stout and water-proof. They should have sliding doors to confine the rnb- hira if desired, and should nlso nave small holes near the top for ventila tion. If a court is used, hutcbes win still be needed for breeding does. a mbblt-nroof fence to Inclose a grass court should be made of heavy nnnirrr nettinir 5 or 6 feet wide and of 1-Inch mesh. SACRED MISTLETOE. The drulds with ceremonies of great solemnity used to collect mistletoe with a golden sickle "against the festival of winter solstice." Only the oaks bear ing mistletoe were sacred to this an cient ocder of men. ' It Is recorded thnt the people's rev erence for the priests proceeded in great measure from the cures which the priests effected by means of this curious green plant of the pear-like berries. It was collected thus cere moniously by the drulds because It was supposed to drive away evil spirits. The reason among the drulds for bringing In bits of evergreen from the woods and adorning the house is a most charming and lovable one : "The houses were decked with evergreen In December that the Sylvan spirits might repair to them and remain un nlpped with frost nnd cold winds until a milder season had renewed the foli age of their darling abodes." Crafts man. Forerunner of Christmas. The spirit of merrymaking that marks our Christmas holidays had Its origin with the Roman feast called the Saturnalia. This was a festival in honor of Saturn, father of the gods. It lasted for a week or two, beginning about the 19th of December, and was the occasion for great revelry among all classes. No business was transact ed during this period, war was sus pended, private feuds were forgotten or forgiven, and general good fellow ship reigned supreme. Friends ex changed presents with one another, and the slaves were waited upon by their masters and mistresses. A Wish. E SLOW Kl Eat less meat if you feel Back achy or have Bladder trouble, No man or woman who eats meat regularly can make a mistake by flushing the kidneys occasionally, says a well-known authority. Meat forms uric acid which excites the kidneys, they become overworked from the strain, get sluggish and fail to filter the waste and poisons from the blood, then we get sick. , Nearly all rheuma tism, headaches, liver trouble, nervous ness, dizziness, sleeplessness and ur inary disorders come from sluggish kidneys. The moment you feel a dull ache In the kidneys or your back hurts or if the urine is cloudy, offensive, full of sediment, irregular of passage or at tended by a sensation of scalding, stop eating meat and get about four ounces of Jad Salts from any phar macy; take a tablespoonful in a glass of i water before breakfast and In a few days your kidneys will act fine. This famous salts is made from the acid of grapes and lemon Juice, com bined with lithia, and has been used for generations to flush and stimulate the kidneys, also to neutralize the acids in urine so it no longer causes irritation, thus ending bladder weak ness. Hair that loses Its color and lustre, or when it fades, turns gray, dull and lifeless, is caused by a lack of sulphur in the hair. Our grandmother made up a mixture of Sage Tea and Sulphur to keep her locks dark and beautiful, and thousands of women and men who value that even color, that beautiful dark shade of hair which is so at tractive, use only this old-time recipe. Nowadays we get this famous mix ture improved by the addition of other ingredients by asking at any drug store for a 50-cent bottle of "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound," which darkens the hair so naturally, so even ly, that nobody can possibly tell It has been applied. You just dampen a sponge or sofi brush with it and draw this through your hair, taking one small strand at a time. By morn ing the gray hair disappears; but what delights the ladies with Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound, is that,, besides beautifully darkening the hair after a few applications, It also brings back the gloss and lustre and gives It an appearance of abundance.
