Working for N'ew County. Cottage Grove People of South ern Lane and Northern Douglas counties are again asking for the creation of "Nesmith county," this time by the initiative. Dunsmore, who is an order 4851 o 80,000 Acres to Be Irrigated. Eugene Plans are perfected for bringing under irrigation the exten sive valley lands between the Will amette and Lower McKenzie rivers. The tract lies just across the Will amette from Eugene and adjacent to Springfield. It comprises some 30, 000 acres. The problem of securing water for this area was solved through the utilization of Clear and Fish Lakes, at the source of the McKenzie, as storage reservoirs. Normal School Board to ftleet. Salem Secretary C. L. Starr, of the State Board of School Regents, has sent notices to all the members of the board that a meeting of the board will he held at the capltol at 10 a. m., on May 8, for the purpose of considering the policy of the board relative to the operation of the normal schools for the school year of 1909-10. Engine Jumps Track Into Ocean. Astoria As one of the engines was running on the jetty trestle, at the mouth of the river and about three miles out some unnoticed ob struction caused it to leave the tracks and topple into the ocean.
