No Worn Out Land "Contrary to expressions fre quently heard, there is no womout land in" the Willamette valley", said John"Shimanek of Scio, Ore. Mr. Sh'manek says the trouble with the land is that it is sour. Sometimes men fail to get results from manure because of the acid condition of the toil. He has' experienced that him self. He has turned the land over the next season nd found the man ure still not dissolved. "I have felt," he says, "that I have merely put the manure in'a silo. The acia has kept it from dissolving. "All the land heeds lime; low, . sour land as much as two or three tons per acre. On a small garden tract that was very low and sour I sowed at the rate of fully the e tans per acre, early in March. It saemed to change the texture of the soil, and the garden is now growing nicely. On other land the lime "has .had as much effect as a good coat of manure, put on land right alongside of it, and there is no question of lime adding efficien cy) manure when'put on the same land."' ": " Mr. Shimanek has had the best result by putting lime on in the fill. Put on as late as April, he says, it will not show in the crops ; until the next season. He began experimenting with the use of lime 10 years ago, and has land , that still show the effect from that ; long ago.
