Frederick Warde as Silas Marner Remembered in Monmouth as the Man Who Present ed Hamlet at the Normal School in February. Frederick Warde, the noted English actor, star in the Mutual Masterpicture De Luxe Edition, "Silas Marner," a film adaption of George Eliot's famous novel, which will be shown at the Norm theater on Tuesday, April 11, is one of the greatest of living ac tors and is a recognized authority on Shakespeare and his dramas. He is well known throughout the Continent and in the United States as a lecturer on Shrike peare and as a star in Shakes pearean productions. His career on the legitimate 6tage has been a long and bril .liant one and his name is famili ar to all followers of the best In drama. It was no easy matter to persuade him to act in front of the camera but when he saw the scenario for "Silas Marner" which he declares is his favorite novel, he succumbed to the lure of the screen and consented to appear under the direction of his son Edward Warde, one of the best known directors in film dom. Those who remember Mr. Warde on the stage will welcome him to the screen as he has never appeared to such excellent ad vantage as in the title role in "Silas Marner," a picture which has never been excelled in the histojy of moving picture dramas. This week Bert Cross assumes control of the Home laundry and will run the same in the future. Robert Smith the retiring laun dryman will leave the city. Mr. Cross plans some substantial im provements in the service and will be in a position to give Mon mouth people a good laundry. TO DEBATE OVERSEER Grange To Hold Open Meet Next Saturday Afternoon The Grange will hold its regu lar monthly meeting at Grange ha!l next Saturday commencing at 10:30 ' in the forenoon. The program of the morning will be routine, followed by initiation. All members are urged to be present. After the grange dinner at noon a Good Roads program will Be put on as the feature of the afternoon session. There will be a debate on the question: Resolv ed -That, the county court is jus tified in discont:nuing the office of County Road Overseer." The affirmative will be supported by S. W. Mrs. Hastings was 79 years of age Wednesday and a company of 35 lady friends gave her a sur prise that afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elkins. Al report a good time. Mrs. Hast ings is one of Oregon's pioneers, having come to the state in 1845. Berry entertained the C. W. M. of the Christian church "at the home of Mrs. Berry Tuesday afternoon. Following the pro gram, refreshments of sand- witches, cake, and coffee were served. All spent a very pleas ant afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Murdock and child of Salem spent Satur day, Sunday and Monday with Mr. Murdock's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Murdock. The Endeavorers at the Chris tian church are going to debate this question next Sunday even ing at 6:30: Resolved, That the Endeavor trains the young peo ple in Christian service better than the Bible school. The only trouble was that most of the boys were away on an impromptu picnic. Walker and Hinkle were the only regu lars within hearing of the alarm bell but there were plenty of volunteers and the hose cart was waltzed down to the scene of alarm in double quick time. The fire was on the roof of the home of J. H. Moran and so quick was the response to the alarm that only a few shingles on the roof were destroyed.
