Mr. Claggett visited Dallas Sun day. Mrs. Ada Walker spent Sunday in Dallas. Miss Leora Shank has returned from Silverton. Fred Moseman is driving a new up-to-date milk wagon. ' Fred Hooper was a passenger to McMinnville Saturday. Everybody went to the picnic at Ridders Grove Saturday. Miss Pearl Percival returned Sunday evening from Portland. Charley Williams went to Scio Sunday to attend the ball game. Mr. Conley, of Portland, made a business trip to our city Friday leaving Saturday. Hanna Bros, are preparing to have a cement side walk in front of their hardware store. J. Dyer's little son was thrown from his pony one day last week, dislocating his collar bone. ' Don't forget the races next ' week. The track is in good shape and many fine horses are expect ed. Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Kirkland went to Portland Saturday. Mr Kirkland returned Sunday even ing. Mr. Bollen, of Sulem, was look ing after his hop yard in the Airlie neighborhood, Friday and Saturday. Miss Cuthbert returned Sunday from Dallas, where she has been attending t he commencement ex ercises. The base ball game between Portland and Independence Sun day was won by Independence. There was a largv crowd in attendance. 'J. W. Richardson, Jr. returned from Corvallis Saturday, where he has been vepairinga house for Mr. Merwin. Mrs. Spong, who has been visit imr her sister Mrs. C. A. Moore, has returned to her home at Car son Springs. The S. P. Railroad is repairing their track from the depot to the river. New piling is being driv en and the track straightened up. Saw logs will be brought from Falls City by rail and dumped in the river for the saw mill. Mr. and Mrs. Fitchard, Harold and Dorothy and Mrs. Chappell, left Monday evening in their auto mobile for Portland where they will attend the Rose Festival then, they will go to Seattle to visit the exposition. Kirk delivers the class address at the graduating exer cises of the Newberg high school Friday night. in the last two weeks there have been so many visiting teach ers in the building that we are unable to learn the names of half of them. Miss Snamrle was in Dallas in ! attendance at a wedding Thurs day, Miss Seeley conducted the seventh grade examinations in her absence. In the May examinations 17 of the Independence 8th grade pass ed and seven others failed in one study only. Twenty-seven took the examination. Everybody is enduring a heavy bombardment of examinations. These hot days are fine for ex aminations. School will close Fri day and then we will be "knee deep in June". The entertainment to be given in the Opera House on Saturday June 12, promises to be an un usually good one. The 8th and 10th grades will receive their di plomas. Tne Independence publ c school huse ball team lays claim to the championship of the county, as they defeated all comers. First they defeated Monmouth, tneiij Dallas and later Falls City. All the teachers were re-elect ed for next year but Miss Church Miss Spangle and Miss MoRey- nolds, resigned, and Mr. and Airs. Mcintosh, of Newberg and Miss Mary Whitney, of Monmouth, were elected to fill the vacancies. Miss Church has been elected to the principalship at Buena Vista and Miss Spangle goes to a posi tion in the Newberg school. We heard that Miss McReynolds had accepted an offer, but we did not learn where she would be locat ed or what grade she would have. Hotel Hampton D. M.
