The class was very fortunate in procuring such an able speak er as Rev. Nave. On Monday at 10:00 a. m. the closidg semester assembly was held. There was no les enthu siastismthan on former occasions of this kind. The several class es marched in separately and gave songs and yells with the old time spirit The regular assem bly program was carried out. Breakfast was ser ved with the Presidents usual hospitality and all have declared this to be one of the most pleas- ! D ll 1 ing events oi tne weeK and one long to be remembered. At 2:30 p. m. a tennis tourna ment was held. Old time stars and present devotees of the game were the participants. They fur nished much interest for their audience and many "old timers" truly got into the spirit of the game. These are a few of the enthusiasts; Hubert Goode, Geo. Murdock, Curtis Johnson, Arlie Hampton, Frank Butler, Graves Crowley, Lester Lindsay, Glen Work, Ervin Springer and J. B. V. Butler. On Monday evening the joint program of the three literary so cieties was held in the chapel. The program was as follows: Roll Call Quotations Society Paper Mabel Ellis Girl's Glee Club Resume Ruby Shearer Guitar Solo Archie McNeil Humophone Clara Hartzog Recitation Hazel Jewett Solo Lora Craven Oration Joe Bogynska Piano Solo Mabel Boydston Character Sketch Susie Hoff man Quarrel Scene Julius Caesar T. D. Presentation -Effie Shore Boy's Quartet Tuesday morning a girl's bas ket ball game was held on the campus. The lineup was as fol lows: Misses M. Murdock, and D. Mur dock; Misses Craven, Force, and Weston; and Missses Kuykendall, Jewett, Hixon, Henson, Rasmus sen. The last named won the game. The class day program was rendered to a large audience on Tuesday, p. m. It was: Music, Normal Male Quartette; President's address, D. C. Hen ry; Class History, Hazel Jewett; Class Poem, Mrs. P. M. Stroud; Piano Solo, Burton Arant; Ora tion, Mabel Robinson; Witticisms Ruth Fugate; Prophecy, Hilda Tooze; Vocal solo, Elbert Arant; Oration, E. H. Hedrick; Class Will, Ethel Laidlaw; Class Pres entation, Elbert Arant; Music, Normal Girls' Quartette; Prome nade, Planting of Tree, Present ing of Spade, Class Song. On Tuesday evening occured the Commencement Recital. This was given by Mr. LeRoy Gesner, Violinist, of Salem; Mrs. May B. Babbitt, Pianiste. The program which was a really musical treat was as follows: Spanish Dance No. 8, Etude Op. 25, No. 12, Symphony Es pagnol, Rhapsodie No. 2, Scherzo Fantastique, by Gesner; Sommer nact, by Normal Girls' Quartet? and Peer Gynt Suit 1, by Mrs. Babbitt and David Campbell. Alter tne concert a Dan was i pi ii i it given in the gymnasium. All had a delightful time. The regular commencement ex ercises were held on Wednesday morning. The annual business meeting of the Alumni was held on Wed nesaay aiternoon. inis was an enthusiastic meeting from' begin ning to end and there is every reason to believe that excellent plans were made to keep the members in touch with each oth er and with the whole school proposition. It is safe to say that every old student will rally to the loyal support when the real time comes, which to be brief, is HERE and NOW. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: resident, Ira Powell; 1st Vice resident, Arlie Hampton; 2nd Vice-President, Fred Crowley; Secretary, A. S. Briggs; Treas urer, Mrs. J. B. V. Maurice Butler ran into an elec trie light pole and injured his automobile. Miss Allie Butler, of Mon mouth, was the guest of Bessie Butler Tuesday. Robert Grounds, of Monmouth, was visiting relatives in Inde pendence Tuesday. Ed. Wallace spent a few days of this week with his mother and sister of this city. Mrs. K. C. Eldridge and little son left Wednesday to spend a few days in Portland. Geo. Ruef and family left Wed nesday for a weeks visit in Se attle to attend the fair. J. Irvine, of McMinnville, was in Independence, Wednesday. He was formerly of this city. Misses Bertie Bentley and Babe Damon attended the races at Corvallis the last of the week. M. W. Walker, the proprietor of the Independence Hotel visit ed relatives in Salem last week. Mrs. E. Allin, of Corvallis, is spending this week with her daughter Mrs. Chas. Shenefield. Miss Clara Purvine returned from Portland Friday where she has been attending the Rose Fes tival. Dr. Duganne returned Sunday evening from Portland where he has been attending the Rose Fes tival. Miss Sylvia Fletcher of Cor vallis, has been visiting at the home of Mrs. Ellison the past week. Cleve Robinson, a former bar Der oi tnis city, has accepted a position in a barber shop in Mc Minnville. Mrs. W. R, Allin and little son William returned Wednesday from a weeks visit with relatives in Portland. Roy Gessner, a violinist of Sa lem, passed through here Mon day on his way to the Monmouth commencement Hector Gingrass returned the last of the week from a trip to Wilhoit Springs. He is much im proved in health. Mrs. Floyd Williams who has been visiting for several weeks with relatives in Corvallis re turned Tuesday. E. Townsend and family, of Seattle, Wash., arrived Monday Mr. Townsend is a former bar ber in this city. Miss Lois Osborne left Wed nesday for Portland where she expects to spend several weeks with her sister. Miss Jessie Patterson of Ash land came Thursday evening and will visit at the home of W. W. Percival this week. Mrs. Ira Smith, of Marshfield, passed through here Tuesday on her way to Portland. She was formerly of Monmouth. Grover Mattison and Sam Ir vine went to Portland the last of the week to attend the Rose Car nival, returning Sunday. J. W. Richardson Jr., who has been working in Portland, came Wednesday to spend a few days with his family in this city. Tom Hart has the honor .of raising the "Rough" the little boat belonging to Dr. Parrish. It has been under water for several weeks. Chas. A. Wood and wife, of Kenewick, Washington, are vis iting at the home of Mr. and Mrs.' Sam Goff, Mrs. Wood's parents. Miss Ada Ketchum a nurse at the Good Samaritan Hospital has been spending several weeks here and Salem, returned to Portland Tuesday. Opal Hall, of Monmouth, ar rived Thursday from New York where she has been studying art. Miss Hall is a very talented young lady. Crosby Dalton and Dean Walk er attended the dance at Mon mouth Tuesday evening. The Independence Orchestra furnish ed the music. W. A. Messner and wife, of McMinnville, came last Friday to spend a few days with friends here. Mr. Messner is a former business man of this city. Miss Bertha Bohannon came from Corvallis the last of the week to spend two weeks' vaca tion with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bohannon. Mrs. Will McCready, of Mc Minnville, passed through here Wednesday on her way home from a weeks visit with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Boothby, of Monmouth. Mrs. Mary McCormac and Mrs. Robert Wallace, of Denver, Col., were the guests of I. M. Butler Tuesday. They are also visising relatives at Monmouth, and will start for California Thursday. '09, is a Commencement guest. Miss Lottie Cole '12, of Sher wood, returned to her home on Saturday morning. Mrs. C. W. Blakesley, of St Helen, is visiting her daughter Miss Sadie Ellis at Mrs. Reming ton's. Miss Anna Godberson, of The Dalles, is the guest of Miss Alpha Wilson. Miss Godberson is ac companied by her mother. Miss Irmalee Campbell who has spent the past winter in Eu gene is the guest of Miss Jessie Hyde during Commencement week. Mrs. Hathaway, of Tillamook, has been in Monmouth for the past week. Her daughter, Miss Carrie is a member of the grad uating class. Mrs. Baker, whose daughter Miss Incy, is a member of the graduating class, has come from her home in Forest Grove to at tend the festivities. Mrs. A. M. Larson and Mrs. G. Pearson and little daughter "Bonnie", of Astoria, arrived early in the week to be present at the graduating exercises. Miss Agnes D. Campbell has completed a most successful years study at O. A. C. Miss Campbell had the honor of beine on the staff of this years Orange. Miss May Goode and Hubert Goode, of Po tland, have return ed for Commencement. Miss Goode will return soon, but Mr. Goode will remain during the summer. Miss Gladys Houston is visit ing Miss Effie Shore. We have heard excellent reports of Miss Houston who has been instructor in Albany High School during the past year. Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Long and their young son, of Corvallis, are visiting Mrs. Long's mother, Mrs. Burkhead, this week. Mrs. Long was Miss Christie Burk head, of the class of '07. Ray Murphy who has just closed a very successful term of school at Hood River has return ed for Commencement Mr. Mur phy expects to attend the State University this winter. Miss Otta Mayfield '08 who has been teaching at Yamhill the past winter, has returned for Commencement. Miss Mayfield will return to her home at Ball ston the last of the week. Miss Grace W. Whitehouse who has been critic in the 3rd and 4th grades of the Training School left on Thursday via North Yam hill for her home in Tillamook. Miss Whiteoouse will return to Monmouth in September to teach the same grade in the oublic school. Arlie Hampton '04 who has been the principal of Pendleton High School for the past two years and expects to remain the coming winter is here for Com mencement. Mr. Hampton ex pects to attend the National Ed ucational Association at Denver this summer. 1 3
