Gilbert, of Portland, has bought 100 acres of Mr. Carmack north of Monmouth, making 271 acres owned by Mr. Gilbert in a body. The sale was made through Messrs Peterson & Tucker, of the Monmouth Real Estate Co. Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Hewitt received one of the latest im proved Edison Home phono graphs last week and are justly proud of it. There are none of the squeaky effects present, that are heard in the ordinary phono graph. Jahn, of Portland, representative of the A ti-saloon league, will speak at a union ser vice at the Christian church Sun day evening, at 7:30. He will also speak at the Evangelical church Sunday morning at 11:00. Rev. Jahn is an interesting speak er" and it will be worth your while to hear him. Buena Vista. Mr. Black's family have moved to Hopdale to train hops. Fred Wells and Pearl Lewis were in Buena Vista last Sunday. Mrs. Edd Prather and Mrs. Minnie Baldwin went to Albany Saturday to trade. Mr. and Mrs. Claud Skinner, of Independence, were visiting relatives here last Sunday. Mr. Neal returned from Dallas Monday where he attended the Epworth League convention. Prof. Nash an 1 sister and Fay Baldwin went to Albany Satur day in the launch to do some trad ing. Mr. Holt clcs d his school Fri day after havin taught a very successful school year. He was well liked by all and his presence in this community will be greatly missed. Mr. Holt left Friday evening for his home at Thomas, Oregon, and from there he goes to Mills City whpre he will keep books for a lumbering firm. We wish him the best of success in his new position. Mr. and Mrs. Preston, proprie tors of the Newmarket hotel, 505 one-half Washington street, Port land, have been lookinc at pro perty to exchange with Portland or Independendence property. They like Buena Vista Best. There was no preaching service her3 this last Sunday, but a very interesting and enthusiastic tem perance meeting was held at the Methodist church. The condition of Independence and Polk county was discussed and several helpful suggestions given. Mr. Wells and Mr. Neal were appointed as a committee to get up a resolu tion for the enforcement of the Local Option law in Independence and Polk countv, shying that if the people of Independence did not, stop the sale of intoxicating liquors the people of this com munity would go to Albany to do their trading.
