Get Weitfall to do your paint The Island of Guernsey. In the Country Gentleman, F. S. Peer, the well known deal er in Jersey and Guernsey cattle, has given an interesting state ment of agricultural conditions in thhMand. The island con tarfon1;S,100 acres, of which WfM a rounder cultivation, the remaffc&r being worthless. The acreage under glass on the island is 3C2. The glass houses, if placed end on end, would extend eight miles in length and cover an average width of 33 to 35 feet. The population is 41,000, or two and one-fourth persons to the acre, or about 1458 to the square mile. The annual value of fruits, vegetables and flowers exported amounts to about 12,700,000, or over $230 per acre for acreage under cultivation on the island. And yet, out of the 11,023 acres under cultivation, more than 8000 acres are devoted to raising hay, grass, vetches, etc., for feed ing, and about 1300 acres to oats, wheat and barley. It appears, tfteS, that the land devoted to raising fruits, vegetables and flowers gives average returns of over $1000 per acre annually from the portion exported, with out regard to what is comsumed by the 41,000 residentsnand their annual visitors numberingmany thousands. The average aitnual value of all crops of all kinds is about $ -H00 per acre The annual rental of land varies from $35 to $100 per acre. It is evident only a capitalist who ttn farm ttm acres in Guernsey. Ex. Will Start a Dairy. K. r. Wicelsworth, oi near Heppner, Oregon, recently call ed on State Dairy and Food Com missioner, J. W.
