The Island of Guernsey.
In the Country Gentleman,
F. S. Peer, the well known deal
er in Jersey and Guernsey cattle,
has given an interesting state
ment of agricultural conditions
in thhMand. The island con
tarfon1;S,100 acres, of which
WfM a rounder cultivation, the
remaffc&r being worthless. The
acreage under glass on the island
is 3C2. The glass houses, if
placed end on end, would extend
eight miles in length and cover
an average width of 33 to 35 feet.
The population is 41,000, or two
and one-fourth persons to the
acre, or about 1458 to the square
mile. The annual value of fruits,
vegetables and flowers exported
amounts to about 12,700,000, or
over $230 per acre for acreage
under cultivation on the island.
And yet, out of the 11,023 acres
under cultivation, more than
8000 acres are devoted to raising
hay, grass, vetches, etc., for feed
ing, and about 1300 acres to oats,
wheat and barley. It appears,
tfteS, that the land devoted to
raising fruits, vegetables and
flowers gives average returns
of over $1000 per acre annually
from the portion exported, with
out regard to what is comsumed
by the 41,000 residentsnand their
annual visitors numberingmany
thousands. The average aitnual
value of all crops of all kinds is
about $ -H00 per acre The annual
rental of land varies from $35
to $100 per acre. It is evident
only a capitalist who ttn farm
ttm acres in Guernsey. Ex.
Will Start a Dairy.
K. r. Wicelsworth, oi near
Heppner, Oregon, recently call
ed on State Dairy and Food Com
missioner, J. W. Bailey to assist
him. in selecting a carload of
dairy cows with which to sftirt a
Viiry on his home ranch. With
the assistance of Mr. Bailey this
was soon accomplished, thirteen
of these coming from the herd
of Dan Bloor, near Jefferson, and
the others from near Portlan
With this purchase was included
a fine Jersey bull from the farm
of Ckas. Cleveland, of Gresham
The entire herd cost a little over
11600, and Mr. Wi'glesworth
starts with the best herd in the
interior of Oregon. He is a large
sheep breeder, having about3000
head on the ranges, . but is pre
paring to offset any contingency
th:tf may arise from the lessen
ing of the ranges for grazing
purposes.-Oregon Agriculturist.
